Efforts to Repel Gulf Oil Spill Are Described as Chaotic
New York Times ^ | June 14, 2010 | CAMPBELL ROBERTSON

Posted on 06/15/2010 4:56:37 AM PDT by libstripper

Deano Bonano, the emergency preparedness director for Jefferson Parish, marched from a motor home being used as a command center to an office across the street filled with BP officials.

It was late May. Oil had been creeping into the passes around Grand Isle. Two fleets of fishing boats were supposed to be laying out boom, the long floating barriers to corral oil and protect the fragile marshes of Barataria Bay.

But the boats were gathered on the inland side of the bay — the wrong side — anchored idly as the oil oozed in from the Gulf of Mexico. BP officials said they had no way of contacting the workers on the boats, Mr. Bonano recalled.

“You’re watching the oil come in,” Mr. Bonano said, “and they can’t even move.”

For much of the last two months, the focus of the response to the Deepwater Horizon explosion has been a mile underwater, 50 miles from shore, where successive efforts involving containment domes, “top kills” and “junk shots” have failed, and a “spillcam” shows tens of thousands of barrels of oil hemorrhaging into the gulf each day.

This is what happens when a totally inexperienced communist street agitator (aka "community organizer") is elected president by a bunch of absolute fools who won't even ask for his real birth certificate.

Sierra Club chairman Carl Pope told a Maine newspaper last week that Obama is, in his view, the “best environmental president since Teddy Roosevelt.”

Chaotic is hardly the correct word given the following facts.

Bombshell expose'. The real reason the oil still flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

Top PR firm for BP tied to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel

BP, feds could make millions from runaway well's oil

The same ‘fools’ should be watching this oil spill crisis very closely.

Eventually this crisis will be a mirror image of our future medical system under Obama Care while being managed by the very same oil spill incompetent bureaucrats presently in charge of the Gulf spill.

This is what happens when a billionaire or more is trying to stuff his pockets with more money and power. These low lifes should be exposed and arrested for high crimes and misdemeanors.

This is becoming the biggest political fiasco in history along with the biggest oil spill. A few points....

** The well continues to deteriorate. Crude oil is filthy stuff, full of grit and sand, and when it is being expelled at high pressure the fluid is extremely abrasive. It is slowly eating away the internals of the BOP and any other metal parts it is leaking past.

** If you have been watching the ROVs you will frequently see them checking the BOP inclinometer. That’s a device that shows if the BOP and the riser stack below it are leaning or not. The entire stack must remain level, or the 450 ton weight of the BOP could topple the entire assembly.

** Top Kill failed because the riser itself may be damaged at the 1000’ level below the BOP. If that is indeed the case, then high pressure oil could very well be leaking out into other layers and compromising what little remains of the well’s integrity.

** Estimates of the volume of oil in the formation the Deepwater Horizon was drilling into range as high as 2.2 Billion barrels of crude oil, and untold trillions of cubic feet of natural gas.

** Charlie Gasparino was on FBN yesterday talking about how BP is seeking help to protect itself from a hostile takeover, and there is a lot of discussion on the street about how nobody, including BP and the Federal Government, really understand what all of the potential liabilities are, and there is very serious concern that BP could easily be forced into Chapter 11 because of this spill.

** It appears that the Jones Act is not being suspended because the Labor Unions are opposed to it, and that is why foreign skimmers and other equipment is not on site.

** Every time Premier Hussein opens his pie hole, BP’s stock takes another 10% hit on Wall Street. The Regime is steadily talking BP right into bankruptcy court, and in my view that does absolutely nothing to either stop the leak or control the ongoing damage. If BP is bankrupted then who will continue the work??

** Speaking of work, is it really in everyone’s best interest to pay workers to dress out in scarce and expensive hazmat suits, pay them $18.00 an hour to go pick up tarballs on the beach for 20 minutes and rest for 40 minutes every hour??

In fact this leak could indeed get worse, a lot worse, if any of the scenarios that are being talked about take place. There is concern about the entire 450 ton blowout preventer tipping over and removing what little resistance to flow from the well that there is. Yesterday I was reading about a proposal to try and put down large anchors around the BOP and try to attach cables to it in order to try and control the leaning.

If the sea floor over the high pressure oil formation has indeed been compromised from any number of reasons that date back to October when BP first started drilling, then it is entirely possible that at some point the seafloor itself could collapse around the wellhead and vent the entire contents of the formation directly into GOM. At that point there is nothing on earth that would stop this. If the well casing really is that badly compromised, I question whether they can plug this thing from the bottom, especially since the well will deteriorate even further between now and August.

Is FEMA running this show?
Sounds like some of their best work.

Maybe BP could send one of their underwater robots (ROV's) over to the other side with a note carried by one of those mechanical arms. Or give Marconi a 'grant' so he can finish inventing the radio.

: )

Pope has been with the Sierra Club for more than thirty years.

The Sierra Club also continued to hold the line in protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling, and in stopping repeatedly proposed omnibus energy legislation that would give tens of billions in subsidies to oil, coal and nuclear interests.

Pope is co-author — along with Paul Rauber — of Strategic Ignorance: Why the Bush Administration Is Recklessly Destroying a Century of Environmental Progress
