Jet Li plays unusual role in Chinese melodrama

SHANGHAI (Hollywood Reporter) - Action hero Jet Li gives a respectable turn as a terminally ill father grooming his autistic son to survive on his own in "Ocean Heaven" -- a decent, if orthodox job by Xue Xiaolu.

Film

Xue off-sets some of the wholesome soppiness of this genre by keeping the tone light, the story simple and steered clear of grueling ordeals. Compared with another father-son story "Together," which she co-scripted and Chen Kaige directed, it is less melodramatic and artificial.

Set mostly in a marine park in Qingtao province, its interpretation of autism owes less to "Rain Man" than to "The Big Blue," awash with holistic, quasi-fantastical overtones, enhanced by Christopher Doyle's ravishing aquatic cinematography.

He is SUCH a dreamboat. If he would only stop cheating on me with his wife, I would be a lot happier.

My wife is also a big fan of Jet Li.

I keep telling her if she doesn’t cool it, I’m going to have to kick his ass, but she doesn’t believe me.

Jet Li is gorgeous.

Not if you get a closeup of his face, boi has some seriously bad skin. But I think he has made some great films, I just saw "The Warlords" a week or so ago, he looked very much older than his previous roles. He said he was through with Wushi films, been there and done that, I applaud him for trying to break into other genres. But I still love all that Kung Fu stuff the best.

He might likely kick yours actually. He is SO debonair. I read that his first marriage was to a wealthy woman who had fallen in love, taken care of him, and he had married her out of obligation. Now he’s married to an actress and they waited ten years to commit.

“if you get a closeup of his face, boi has some seriously bad skin”

It’s not that bad. Maybe smallpox scarring.

Sounds like it gives him "character". Esp. if he wants to play the role of a bad guy.

For me, though, there's no beating Bolo Yeung for a Kung Fu action star. :)

He played a Triad in Lethal Weapon 4 and was the sole reason I watched the movie.

For *real* martial arts I recommend “King of the Kickboxers” or “TC 2000” (mainly for the role Bolo plays, which for once is a good guy!) :)

I don’t think Jet has been able to show his skills off because the filmmakers prefer stunts rather than actual fighting.

In his younger days (before he was in "Enter the Dragon") Bolo was the bodybuilding champion of China. One day he decided to seek opportunity elsewhere and jumped in the ocean and *swam* to Hong Kong, where he became active in martial arts movies.

He's my hero! :)
