Panel says candidate Paul not board certified (Rand Paul Certified himself)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The national panel that approves doctors as board certified said U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul isn't on the list, even though he has campaigned as holding the endorsement.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that the American Board of Medical Specialties, which works with the American Medical Association, doesn't recognize certification by a group Paul founded in 1991 and heads.

Paul, a Republican from Bowling Green and an opthamologist, says he's certified by the National Board of Opthamology.

"He's not board certified," Boukas said

Doctors do not need to be certified to practice medicine in Kentucky. But, hospitals generally prefer or require that doctors be board certified to earn privileges. That includes the Medical Center and Greenview Regional Hospital in Bowling Green, where Paul practices.

Greenview chief executive Mark Marsh and Medical Center vice president Doris Thomas said those facilities require either board certification or eligibility for board certification to practice there.

Paul, along with his wife and in-laws, incorporated the National Board of Opthamology in 1999, with Paul as the "owner/president" of the organization.

The group dissolved in 2000 when Paul didn't file the necessary paperwork with the Kentucky Secretary of State's office. Paul revived the organization in September 2005, three months before his certification from the American Board of Opthamology was set to expire.

Asked what standards the group uses, Paul's wife, Kelly, who is listed as its vice president, declined to comment.

"I'm not involved in that," Kelly Paul said. "I'm not officially talking about that today."

Paul, through campaign manager Jesse Benton, said he has been certified by his own group since 2005.

Original story in the Louisville Courier Journal but that is a blocked source.

A doctor certified by their own personal professional board, administered by his own wife. Now that's ingenious, if not particularly ethical.

If nothing else it appears to be an interesting insight into what sort of legislator he will be. Trainwreck coming 'round the bend.

When asked when he would address the issue, Paul replied: "Uh, you know, never ... What does this have to do with our election?"

Board certification is a voluntary process....Doctors do not need to be certified to practice medicine in Kentucky

So...what exactly is the story here; besides the media's continued hatchet job?

If this was really written by a so-called professional journalist, the twit could at least have used a dictionary to find out how to spell “ophthalmologist.”

The Jack Conway-endorsing, third-rate fishwrap that is the Louisville Courier-Journal will be pulling this crap all between now and November.

The reporter isn’t certified in spelling, as it surely is “ophthalmology,” not opthamology. Also, although not “board-certified,” he is undoubtedly “board-eligible” and licensed to practice.

More trash from a liberal “reporter” who in truth is not a journalist but a propagandist. He twisted the story to make Paul look bad intentionally. The fact that Dr. Paul has been board certified in the past, and evidently not had legal problems related to that and that he is employed at a hospital means he is probably fine ethically and legally on the issue.

Gee, a Libertarian who does not jump through unnecessary government hoops...who would have thought.

This is great news he refused to kowtow to the Doctors union and instead started his own.

Board Certified is not a doc’s union. It is a certification that you are what you say you are as a specialist. It is important and docs don’t lie about it or attempt to “invent” their own boards.

If he passed himself off as board certified as a specialist by a ruse, he is a dishonest man and untrustworthy.

To be board certified, you have the training necessary and have passed tests that evaluate your knowledge.

Uh... Who are the people that certify other doctors? Isn't the certification boards of all the doctor groups made up of other doctors?

Just who is it that makes up these boards and sets the certification rules? Would it be other doctors?

Board Certified is done by the specialist boards and is a way of knowing if a neurosurgeon has done a surgery and neurosurgery residency at an apprpoved program and has passed tests that evaluate his knowledge.

It is a process one goes thru after completing training.

You cannot do one year of surgery and pretend you have done four years. And you cannot be a dunce.

You can be a surgeon and not be board certified but most professionals regard it as a minimum to assure competency.

Some boards are hard to pass, some are easier but it requires at least minimum training and knowledge and usually a lot more. Docs sometimes take speciality boards over and over to pass them.

Sorry, the board is made up of a group of specialists for each speciality. Good docs, competent docs who are boarded themselves.

It is beyond a license to practice, beyond doing internship and residency. It is a demonstration of one’s competence to be what you say you are.

Paul quit the board after they changed the rules in 1992. Before then, once one was “board certified”, they remained that way for life. Instead, though, they changed the rules: to require younger doctors (like Paul) to be certified at $1,500 a pop every few years while the old-timer doctors were ‘grandfathered’ in.

Good for Paul.

All you say is true. My point is why can't Paul create a new board? If the people on his board are competent and trained why is his board any less capable of certification than the other boards?
