Reporting from Fort Bragg, Calif. Twenty days before his planned storybook wedding in Yosemite National Park, Aaron Vargas got drunk on beer and vodka and pocketed a loaded revolver. Then he drove to a remote trailer and shot Darrell McNeill to death in front of the man's horrified wife.
McNeill's death shocked residents of this small city on the rugged Northern California coast, and so did Vargas' motive. But what came next might have been the biggest surprise of all.
Assistant Dist. Atty. Elizabeth Norman describes McNeill, who was unarmed when he was killed, as "a little old man with Parkinson's disease, who was in his little trailer home in his stockings, pants and T-shirt."
But Elizabeth McNeill, Darrell's widow, tells a different story in court documents: "My husband had a secret life that was unknown to me.... I believe my husband sexually molested Aaron when Aaron was a child and may have also molested other children in Fort Bragg."

Oh Dear God......
MY bible says, “ .. and be sure your sin will find you out”
A hundred years is a long time.
I didn't see anything about when it started or when it stopped but I doubt that it went on for that long.
You didn’t read the whole article.
If it is true this is an easy call. Pin a medal on this kid and set him free.
Justice served to the perv. Were I on the jury, I wouldn’t vote to convict!
I know people in Ft. Bragg and the place is chock full of left wing moonbats. I used to go there quite often to see a woman(who was my girl friend at the time)but haven’t been there for a few years. I would imagine that it is still a hot bed of liberalism.
One of the problems with child abuse is that some percentage of the abused children grow up to be abusers themselves.
This elderly man who molested kids had been molested himself by a grandfather. That's what is meant by it going on 100 years.
Tell the young man to get some therapy and let him move on with his life.
Not murder in the first degree, then, what? What would be the charge?
I considered putting “homicide” instead of “murder” as a keyword but hit “Send” too soon.
Towards the end of the article there is something of an explanation about the 100 years comment.
Apparently, the abuse started with the dead guy’s father. I’m not sure if I agree with the assertion that every abuser was abused, but it sounds like it may be true in this case.
None of us had any idea what Darrel had done. He was a fairly quiet, laid back man, and in fact you would not have thought of him as a salesman. He also had MS and was on heavy medications for that. Besides working C-21 he and his wife had a local appliance store. Since we have a bed and breakfast I had bought a few mattresses and blinds from them.
This was truly a tragic happening in our community, and one which will take a long time to heal.
True, a legitimate question. But what needs to be asked is how many lives were destroyed by this man due to the evil he perpetrated on innocent young boys and was allowed to live out his life without any remorse or repercussions.
He finally got the sentence and the justice he deserved. The means in which that sentence was carried out is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.
Well, tis a small world, isn't it. You're so right, we have more than our share of left wing moonbats. Actually there's Mendocino which is 5 miles south of us and it's even worse than Ft. Bragg as far as being liberal. Ft. Bragg, is (I'm sure you remember) a "working man's" town, and has always been considered the "ugly stepsister" to Mendocino which is very artsy. It's a shame since the whole area is quite beautiful.
You raise a valid quesion.
However, if the killer is cut some slack because he was abused, shouldn’t the deadman also be cut some slack because HE was abused?
Maria L. La Ganga HA HA HA put down the bong.
Better to make his evil public, see him arrested, his deeds exposed for all to see and put on trial for his pedophilia and sentenced to spend the rest of his ugly life behind bars. Often, creeps like McNeill take their own life when found out and facing a long prison term. You never know.
Now, the young man, Vergas, faces prison and a serious criminal record, to boot, even if he escapes hard jail time. His life has been damaged and he'll never forget what he did, as justified as he may have felt at the moment.
I don't defend the pedophile Vergas killed but I can't condone cold-blooded murder, no matter how hideous the crime and disgusting the perpetrator, no matter how j ustified it may seem. This is a tragic case that has no happy ending, even if Vergas is spared prison time.
