Boom's a Bust as Oil Spill Seeps into Perdido Pass

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Extensive measures aimed at keeping the Gulf spill from penetrating Perdido Pass failed their first test early Wednesday as globs of hazardous oil rode a rising morning tide through the inlet and settled on beaches, bulkheads and grass beds in the city's inland water bodies.

"I'm mad," Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon told about 500 of his constituents during a midday public forum. "I'm absolutely sick to my stomach."

As slicks approached the pass overnight, city officials said they asked that heavy-duty boom strung across much of the pass be used to close off the inlet completely but were rebuffed by the U.S. Coast Guard. By midday the tide had reversed and oil-splotched water coursed back out of the basin toward the open Gulf and awaiting skimmer boats.

But the damage had been done.

Thick, sticky oil coated the brick-covered southern edge of Boggy Point, a stubby peninsula at the confluence of Cotton Bayou, Old River and Terry Cove that hosts a public boat launch. Neon boom that wrapped the basin's islands and sensitive submerged grass beds was stained the color of chocolate.

"There goes my flounder fishing," said Bob Wilson Jr., who lives in the Bear Point neighborhood adjacent to the private waterfront. Wilson said he first spotted the oil at about 10:30 a.m., and though he called the sighting into the Unified Command in Mobile, no one had been by for so much as a look four hours later.

...No worries, though. I'm sure the "Smartest Man to ever occupy the Oval Office" is diligently working away at a new plan that will solve the problem. (/Sarc)

Not to make excuses for Obama, but what is he supposed to do? There is no solution to this. It won’t be solved until they get those relief wells finished, which will be a couple more months.

They all ought to be ringing up the Whitehouse, demanding to speak to the a-hole who said he was in charge, and was taking responsibility for it.

The exact opposite of everything he has done.

he was supposed to accept the help from the international community (could waive Jones Act) and the different people who have tried to bring experts in.

he has dragged his feet in order to shut down Houston oil (not in his pocket) and to punish England.

IMO he is not only a narcissist but also a psychopath who will destroy everyone and everything which doesn’t bow down to him. His dark side is showing more and more everyday.

If the Obama administration is keeping reporters out of the main spill area, what we see now coming ashore must be just the tip of the iceberg.

the first thing he should have done is get more involved in a leadership position from day 1. He can look to Giuliani in NYC or Bush nationally on the day of 9/11. This was a situation that needed a leader and he missed the opportunity.

Second, he took on the position after the fact as ‘the man’ in charge, and stated he had been since day 1. In that instance he now owns the failure. There are things that could have been done earlier both to help stop the leak and also to prepare for the cleanup and prevent damage. He and fedgov have been slow to non-existent, outside of the Coast Guard doing their duty.

Is or was?

As far as I’m concerned, ideas and solutions were neglected.

Really? So if he had done the exact opposite of what he has done, the leak would be fixed and there would be no oil headed towards the beaches?

Here’s how you can gauge the seriousness of those who are blaming Obama: Do they have a solution to offer? If not, then they’re just making political hay.

“Not to make excuses for Obama, but what is he supposed to do? There is no solution to this. It won’t be solved until they get those relief wells finished, which will be a couple more months.”

My understanding is that there have been a number of suggestions based upon methods that were successful in largely cleaning up other massive oil spills, and the administration for whatever reason has not implemented these. (There are two separate pieces to this- the leak itself and the continuing spread of the oil.)

For example:

I think you’re right. It’s just a disaster. I feel so bad for all those people on the gulf, including “Bob and his flounder fishing”.

They should have had boats with booms and skimmers out there for the last 4 weeks!

This catastrophe is nothing but a mere inconvenience for dingle Barry, the Kenyan Asshat Usurper.

If he did the opposite, he would have not lifted regulatory restrictions which allowed BP to drill there in the first place. IE - No drilling means no leak. He lifted the regs as a political favor to BP which is in bed with Obama over cap and trade (corrupt Chicago connections).

Bring in the boom from the north east (several miles available now). Bring in the oil skimmers from Holland. Bring in the super tankers from Saudi Arabia. All of the solutions can be done now to mitigate oil damage to the shore areas.

As for the leak, hurry up the secondary recovery vessel. Hurry up the wells to plug the leaking well.

It's likely as not they've long known all that would be pissing on a forrest fire.

The column is cracked all the way down and seeps are flowing up at an ever increasing rate in a 20 mile radius.

Pressures up to 70,000 psi could be involved.

In a recent interview with Palin, someone who has lots of suggestions and actual practical experience in this area, she pointed out that the US emergency response plan for a major spill in the Gulf of Mexico was horribly negligent. Palin stated that it appeared that the feds had just copied what she helped put together in Alaska concerning spills and haphazardly applied them to the Gulf. She stated that the emergency plan even mentioned specific animals not found in the Gulf. Animals which happened to all be found in Alaska. Perhaps she can do for DC what she did for Alaska. Cleanup the oil corruption and stop the palm greasing.
