RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Clint Dempsey scored on a blunder by goalkeeper Robert Green in the 40th minute, and the United States came from behind to tie England 1-1 in the Americans' World Cup opener Saturday.

Steven Gerrard had put England ahead in the fourth minute, blowing past Ricardo Clark to beat goalkeeper Tim Howard from inside the 6-yard box.

But Dempsey tied the score when his 25-yard shot skipped off the grass twice and bounced in off Green's hand,

A disastrous blunder by England goalkeeper Robert Green cost his side victory as they drew 1-1 with the United States in their Group C opener in Rustenburg on Saturday night.

England were leading 1-0 through a fourth minute Steven Gerrard goal approaching halftime when Clint Dempsey sent in a weak shot from just outside the penalty area.

It appeared to be a routine save for Green but astonishingly he let the ball slip through his grasp and despite a despairing dive saw it trickle into the net.

England captain Gerrard gave his side a dream start after he latched on to a neat pass from Emile Heskey to beat Tim Howard in the U.S. goal with ease.

Fabio Capello’s men were holding onto their lead comfortably enough, aside from a scare when Jozy Altidore connected with a Landon Donovan cross to send his header wide, until the fortunate 40th minute equalizer.

The second half saw England press for the winner and Heskey was sent clear by Aaron Lennon but shot straight at Howard.

Wayne Rooney also sent a shot narrowly wide and cleverly set up substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips for a chance from the left side of the penalty area which he sent straight at Howard.

But English hearts were in their mouths as Altidore outpaced Jamie Carragher, who came on for Ledley King at halftime, and bore down on goal.

This time Green came to the rescue, parrying his effort against the post to partially redeem himself for an error which will live long in the memory.

Only in Europe would someone boast about a tie.

RE: Only in Europe would someone boast about a tie.

England is currently ranked among the top 6 in the world in soccer. USA is ranked number 14.

The Brits were favored to win.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good! Howard played a great game, really saved our ass.

“Howard played a great game, really saved our ass.”

I’m in total agreement with you. Howard was stellar!

Can someone tell me what that does to our standings and how many minutes are in a half? I played soccer as a kid, but found myself confused about the time keeping and no nothing about the World Cup schedule.

Thanks.

Ignore the soccer haters. All they do is go on about how they don’t care about the WC, yet they take the time to reply to WC posts to go on about how they don’t care about the WC. I feel the same way about NASCAR, yet I don’t take the time going on those posts to let everyone know how I don’t care about it. Let people enjoy!

We get 1 point for a tie and would get 3 poiunts for a win.

Go to http://www.fifa.com. You can find most of what you’re looking for there.

“Ties” are why soccer will never catch on in America. We have a competitive spirit that most countries don’t have due to socialism.

I have tried to like soccer, I have tried really hard. Just can’t understand why it is so popular.

45 minutes per half, though “injury” or “stoppage” time is tacked on, at the discretion of the ref, to make up for stoppage of play. For the US to get through to the next round, it will depend upon how they and the other teams in their group do in their other games. Both the US and England are 0 - 0 - 1, now, as in 0 wins, 0 losses and 1 draw, for which they get a point. Whatever happens in the Algeria/Slovenia match will help determine things; obviously, a win for either team puts them on top of the group, since they’ll get two points. If they draw, goal differential will determine things.

A French guy I spoke to conveyed the same sentiments to me, except for him, he could not bring himself to love baseball.

I stand corrected, 3 points for a win, not 2.

Yes, Euros are just as baffled by our love of baseball as Americans are by their love of soccer. Of course, many Americans don’t like baseball either, whereas EVERY European loves soccer.

Well I agree with the French guy. Yes Baseball is the National Pastime but I personally just don’t get it.
