Following two days of testimony, a federal panel Friday voted against recommending changes to ease the current blood donation restrictions for gay men, saying more research was needed to help create a road map forward for future change.
By a 9-6 vote, members of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability agreed to continue the current donor policy which rejects blood donations from any man who has had sex with another man a category know as "MSM" even once in the past 33 years.
Gay rights groups and others say the 25-year-old policy is needlessly discriminatory, and the American Red Cross and other blood-collecting groups support a shorter deferral policy, down to as little as 12 months. But blood-user groups lobbied to keep the current policy, saying further research is needed.
The panels nonbinding recommendations will be brought to another panel led by Dr. Howard Koh, HHS assistant secretary of health. HHS recommendations will then go through the Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) regulatory process, said Jerry Holmberg, executive secretary for the panel.

Can’t imagine why. I mean it’s not like homosexual men have much higher rates of transmittable disease or something.
They can test for most everything but it’s simply much cheaper and safer to eliminate high risk folks from the donor pool. Nobody has an inalienable right to have their blood drawn and donated.
human race needs a douche
And they’re not going to stop pursuing this diabolical, dangerous brass ring. Not by a longshot. If they have to install some of their own sodomites on the FDA panel, they will.
It is more than just AIDS. Homosexuals are afflicted with all kinds of diseases that otherwise are found only in the Third World.
Gee,I wonder why there’s something called the Gay Men’s Health Crisis Center....
Screw the fighting man is the policy of the Obama Democrats.
How can we see the lifting of DADT as anything but as you describe?
Nine to six is pretty scary, but maybe those nine voices will speak up and be heard regarding the protection of the military blood supply.
The bash lash against this President is going to be deafening.
“Panel votes to keep restrictions on gay blood donations”
Why the hate?/s
You mean there is concern for the health of non-homos out there? Gee, I thought the bigots concerned with public health were relegated to the junkpile of neanderthals. There may be hope yet for those rednecks opposed to the agenda of the fecal-eaters.
For sure donating blood is not a right, and I personally think it's great that a significant consequence of a homosexual lifestyle is made so pointedly.
But on the other hand, one minor reason for giving blood is that it is almost like a basic de facto health check.
When one goes in for a transfusion, can one check a box “No gay blood.”?
