CADDO GAP, Ark. (AP) -- Flash floods swamped valley campgrounds along a pair of southwestern Arkansas rivers early Friday, killing 16 and leaving anguished families pleading with emergency workers for help in finding dozens of missing people.

Currently in North Little Rock, but we have a lake house in Hot Springs. It’s on Lake Hamilton, a controlled Dam. So the water level is monitored daily. It sits between Lake Ouachita and Lake Catherine.
Used to sell electrical supplies to Kaufman Electric. They had the maintenance contract at Oak Lawn and it was fun calling on them during the season. Got to go in the money counting room!

It could happen again if all this rain and flash snow melt we’re having keeps on through the weekend.
I’ve never done it and wouldn’t do it. Hell, even the Walkill River near me swells into a lake, and it gets going with enough force to knock down trees. It was a factor in choosing my home as well. I’m at the top of a hill, in the highest elevation area in the state lol. People who live in flood zones and camp in floodzones are asking for trouble, especially with big storms upstream. I guess they learned their lesson now. Some of em paid with their lives. It’s a wicked, nasty world. Gotta look out.
Your favorite barbecue place is still there. Not far from us. Oaklawn has expanded & now has a full fledged Casino complete with slots and gaming tables..Lot’s of money to count these days!
This was at Albert Pike. Daughter has a cabin there or maybe HAD a cabin there about a mile down stream from this camp ground. Steep area, no cell phone, you have to drive out about 2 miles to get any signal. Probably no Park Rangers there at night.
People just don’t have any common sense anymore. No one with any camping skills camps in a draw next to the stream.
It's just horrible.
Please let us know how your daughter’s cabin is? You must be so worried.
No actually if the whole area was washed clean it would do the world a favor. Would hate to have her out the money, just insured it, I asked about Flood insurance, No.
If the area did actually have 23 feet of water, in a narrow canyon of sorts, its gone for sure.
When did Arkansas pass casino gambling? I know the rich Wilson farmers in Wilson, Arkansas was trying to get it but it failed. That’s when Tunica, Ms opened up.
I still have family in Marianna, Jonesboro, Conway and Fisher. Get up that way every now and then. Last time I was in Hot Springs Smarty Jones was running.

When that happened, the Hot Springs race track expanded and added new machines and gaming tables. But the machines don't pay out well :( So far, they are the only town to have gaming machines.
We like Tunica better.
A state lottery isn’t the same as casino gambling. So I guess they passed casino gambling, too. Is Hot Springs the only city to have a casino?
Years ago Hot Springs had slot machines in every liquor store. Then Winn Rock took ‘em out.

She’s been trying to call the caretaker, but if he lived there he too may be down river. There were about 20 cabins along that stretch of the river. If the reports are anything close to accurate, there is no way any of the cabins there are remaining. Too bad about the folks camping....... I guess when its your time, if nothing else a satellite will fall on your head.

We had a bunch of Boy Scouts camping on an island in the Delaware River back in the ‘20s. I think it was Tocks Island, they had a major development fight about putting a dam in to control flooding around the ‘70s.
Rained up north in PA/NY and came in overnight with all the kids, etc sleeping. Lost them all as I recall.
PA can flood pretty easily, high volume of rain, it’s not flat and water can move pretty fast. I jumped off a dock into the Delaware once into a few feet of water. By the time I stood up I was 4-6’ downstream. Tried to swim back, no progress at all. Gave up and walked back to the dock, heavy current and then it rained later. River came up and got faster. We had to bring the boat in and stop water skiing because it was too dangerous. I almost washed over the dam because we were drifting faster than I could get back on skis. Luckily it was a small dam and I would’ve been fine, but probably would have washed a long way before I got out. We lose a bunch every year to drownings on the Delaware.
