Arizonas hard-hitting immigration law is driving Hispanics out of the state weeks before the controversial law goes into effect.
Although concrete figures are not available, anecdotal evidence suggests Hispanics, both legal residents and illegal immigrants, are starting to flee.
Schools in Hispanic neighborhoods are reporting abnormal enrollment drops, and businesses that serve Hispanics also report that business is down, according to a USA Today report published Wednesday.
The report suggests that the immigration law is compounding demographic trends that have already significantly curtailed illegal immigration during the past two years. The bad economy has been the primary deterrent to many Hispanic immigrants seeking to enter Arizona, says Jeffrey Passel, a demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington.
If you have a bad economy and a hostile environment, then thats likely to cause people to think twice about coming, and possibly even to leave, Mr. Passel says.
Arizonas new immigration law requires that police conducting routine traffic stops or other checks ask people about their immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that they're in the country illegally.
The law also makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally or to disrupt traffic when hiring day laborers, regardless of a worker's immigration status. It would also become a crime for illegal immigrants to solicit work.
Critics contend the law could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. It could also force an exodus of scared immigrants legal and illegal. Nearly 100,000 illegal immigrants left Arizona after it passed a 2007 law that penalized businesses that hired them, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

If I was thinking of moving, I’d seriously think Arizona.
I strongly doubt that there is an exodus of legal residents. More likely, this is evidence of higher numbers of illegals than thought or admitted.
Now we need the other states to pass the same law !
Illegals will leave the country instead of moving from one state to another if several more states pass similar legislation.
Now, I fully understand why illegal aliens would flee the law in Arizona. That seems like the intended outcome. Well done Arizona!

EXCELLENT!
Go to mejico.
Or Kalifornia.
Don’t come to Texas! We don’t want or need any more of you.
other states interested??
Awesome! No reconquista for the imperialist conquistadors!
Let's not be fooled here. The "legal residents" are a little jumpy because they're living with "illegal" relatives. Anchor babies are just one variety.
Only the Hispanic illegals? What about all the other illegals?
It’s going to be interesting in a few years to see what happens to Arizona’s economy.
Will hospitals start to operate in the red? Or will there be a slump, as the libs claim - because “undocumented workers contribute so much”.
When the other 56 states pass the AZ law, PROBLEM SOLVED.
Nothing like cold hard evidence to back up your hypothesis. I think this writer has a future with in the global warming community.
Great news!
I hope other states follow AZ’s example.
We either stop illegal immigration or we lose America as we know it. If you want more voters in favorite of big government then just turn a blind eye.
I don’t doubt they will.
“anecdotal evidence suggests”
lol
Awesome news!
Just don’t come to Texas
