Pelosi Calls for BP to Suspend Dividends By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Thursday for BP to stop dividend payments to shareholders until small business owners hurt by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are made whole.
“They made $17 billion last year, they should be paying these companies first,’’ Ms. Pelosi said, adding, “And that would be their best public relations, instead of taking out all these ads.’’
Ms. Pelosi spoke on the driveway of the White House, after she and a bipartisan group of Congressional leaders met with President Obama to discuss an array of legislative issues, including jobs legislation, financial services reform and the president’s energy bill, which is currently stalled in the Senate.
Democrats including Mr. Obama say the spill points out the need for a new national energy policy, one that is more reliant on alternative sources of fuel than oil. Ms. Pelosi said the spill “calls out in a very eloquent way’’ for a broad effort to revamp the nation’s approach to energy.
