Unemployment over 20% for Hispanics, African Americans in some cities, and 'jobless recovery' doesn't offer much hope
While economists wring their hands over the weak "recovery" underway, with new jobs in May mostly due to temporary Census hiring, an even starker crisis is playing out in urban areas across the country: There are near Depression-level unemployment rates for minorities in some metropolitan areas.
A new report, Uneven Pain, issued Wednesday by the liberal Economic Policy Institute, looks closely at the different unemployment rates for blacks, whites and Hispanics, based on 2009 data, and its findings are striking, as summed up by EPI: "Unemployment rates for nonwhite populations were particularly high in three cities: Providence had a Hispanic unemployment rate of 21.4% and Detroit and Minneapolis had African American unemployment rates of 20.9% and 20.4%, respectively."
Currently, the May unemployment rate was nearly 10% overall, but there were striking differences among the races: whites at 8.8 percent; blacks at 15.5 percent; and Hispanics, 12.4 percent. Worse, roughly one in four blacks and Hispanics are under-employedthey don't have the full-time jobs they want . . .

The lesson here? Be careful what you vote for...you just might get it.
I don’t want to hear about urban minorities.
The subject for discussion should be the impoverished generally.
Those who work as well as those who don’t.
This is a bad choice in content, In These Times.
“The lesson here? Be careful what you vote for...you just might get it”
Maybe this IS what they want. Beats working!
They will still blame someone other than themselves. They deserve all the poverty they get (and voted for).
Let me guess, women and minorities hit hardest? That’s the answer to every event. How come no deep studies on white people?
Yeah, but at least they can be happy about having a black president.
Screw em’, we’re all hurting and if you PROVED beyond ALL DOUBT that lowering taxes on rich white Republicans would help their plight, they would STILL be against it....
Just saw a report on a reliable news source that indicated 92 percent of blacks continue to strongly support Hussein Obama.
Amazing is it not?
Black teen unemployment is ~40%...the INTENDED consequence of crap education, anti-manufacturing land use regs, and a rising minimum wage.
Well, if all of this economic hardship can be cured by the government, this is prime time. You have a liberal radical Democrat president, and strong Dem. majorities in each house of Congress. They can’t blame evil Republicans for anything now...............
Of course, many of us know that government can’t solve certain problems, but for those who look to government to solve every conceivable social and economic problem, this is their moment. Obama/Pelosi/Reid should be their holy trinity. Along with wise Latinas in our courts, we’re just steps from utopia and nirvana.............
When you kill the goose (rich people) that lays golden eggs (jobs), what do you expect?
Have to admit, I do like hearing about urban minorities now. Democrats have held Congress and written every spending and tax bill for the last 3 years and 4 months. They’ve held the Executive and Congress for 1 year and 4 months. The cities where poverty is most entrenched have been run as Democratic fiefdoms for decades. There has to be a breaking point somewhere—a level of poverty no “community organizer” will be able to convince people is someone else’s fault.
Well, I read the report, and it’s the usual stuff. No mention of criminal activity or teenage pregnancy as explanations for employment differentials between groups, or of taxes to explain geographic differences.
A Republican has as much chance as winning Detroit as I have of growing wings. It’s a one party state as far as urban areas go. Has been since the “great” society. What’s that definition of insanity again?
I know it’s bad but how many of these are illegal from the construction industry? I know a builder in Houston that had 150 closings last month and 2 sales. So some harder times are a comin’ indeed.
What or who is firedoglake?
1. What about Asians.
2. The reason Hispanic unemployment is so high in Hartford and Providence, relative to the lower Hispanic unemployment rates elsewhere (in aggregate, the Hispanic unemployment rate is above that of whites, but below that of blacks nationally), is due to the fact that many of the Hispanics in those cities are the native born children and grandchildren of Puerto Rican migrants who came up here from the 1940s-1960s, and who have no interest in doing the jobs that "Americans won't do." Many of these Hartford and Providence "hispanics" can't even speak Spanish.
Amazing yes. Sad...definitely!
Saw an article on Dayton yesterday. Homes are being advertised on Ebay with a starting price of $1. Checked and the city is run by a 5 member commission which selects a city manager. All 5 members are Democrats and have been for years. It is just tragic. All those beautiful homes in urban centers around the country turned into dumps no one wants. People sweat blood to build those homes.
