Fishery Council Approves Red Snapper Ban

ORLANDO, Fla -- Fishermen will be prohibited from catching red snapper and some other snapper and grouper species in the southeast Atlantic in a nearly 5,000-square-mile zone off the coasts of Georgia and Florida under a measure passed by a federal fisheries management council Wednesday.

Members of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council voted 9-4 in favor of the ban which supporters hope eventually will restore the red snapper's population over the next three decades.

Opponents, though, doubt studies showing that the population is overfished and said Florida fishermen already have been squeezed by restrictions in the Gulf of Mexico due to the BP oil spill.

Wednesday's vote extends for an indeterminate time an interim red snapper ban that was to expire in December.

Opponents said the council at least should have waited to pass the measure until December, when...

You toss them back in the water and watch the sharks or dolphins eat them. Particularly any that have been injured by being caught.

Next will be Mahi Mahi, Blackfin and Bluefin Tuna, Wahoo, King Mackerel. Basically anythng edible. The only think you will be able to fish for is inedible Tarpon and Bonefish. I grew up fishing down off the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys catching Mangrove, Lane and the occasional Mutton snapper. We used to fillet and deep fry them literally minutes after being caught. The marine fishery I contend was bordering on being over-fished back in the 1970’s and early 1980’s but now...pftttt. I was down there last year, went out on a my buds 25 foot Mako with about 10 dozen live shrimp and we caught 35 snapper the smallest was 2lbs and this was in 4 hours. No way you could get a haul like that in the 1970’s in sight of land. Coming next ban on all recreational fishing. The only thing left to do will be to smoke pot at medical marijuana stores or do Yoga at the government reeducation center.

Is there anything at all Obama doesn’t want to control?

No. Nothing.

They’re basically trying to kill the fishing industry in Florida (and probably elsewhere). Remember, this Adminstration is full of radical, anti-fishing “environmentalists” of the type that wanted to rename fish “sea kittens” so that nobody would eat them.

In the Brave New World, those will be the only permitted recreational activities. Oh, that and sex with anything that moves. Or maybe anything at all.

We have wonderful seafood here in New England, so I was unprepared for how delicious the seafood in Florida is. If I lived in Florida I would be beside myself.

South Atlantic Fishery Management Council

They are misnamed.

The "south" Atlantic is way below the equator and the "southeast" Atlantic is off the coast of Africa.

They are actually referring to the southeast north Atlantic.

You may notice that the National Hurricane center gets it right...even tough it sounds odd.

I don’t know how you do it in the South, but out here, if you reel in a snapper (from about 60 feet down), they have some sort of embolism.

You're right! I caught snapper in Monterey Bay once and once out of the water he looked to have had a bad time with the pressure change.

Well like Mark Levin says in his radio show.it will never be enough, the logical conclusion to any nanny state is Auschwitz. The tyrants and their apparatchiks first going after our recreation then our vocations, then our food and then our lives. Think I am kidding look at the moves on regulating the Internet which gives people enjoyment and a sense of freedom. Look at the nanny state's ijntrusion into sports. Obama and his ilk are mentally ill, they really have some malady. Ever observe a real lefty, like across a room, most of them are stuttering, twiching, slovenly, erratic with the intellectual depth of a kiddie pool. They almost always are of two kinds of people, overbearing, loud and obnoxous or brooding and sinister. Since we are going ghetto this week with Obamam and his kicking as* comment. Obama wants to be UP in all your shizit.

I know a girl who went on a week long fishing trip with six other guys.

Yeah, all she came back with was big, red snapper.

Well King Mackerel is only barely edible (at least in my book) so maybe we can keep after them.

Yes, I’m SURE Chinese, Cuban, Russian, Venezuelan, Mexican, Honduran, Brazilian and Panamanian fishing industries will abide by this ban. I’m just SURE of it./SARC
