- California Republicans took an historic step Tuesday by nominating two wealthy businesswomen to challenge Democratic icons for governor and U.S. Senate.
Meg Whitman, the billionaire former eBay chief executive, easily won the Republican primary for California governor while former Hewlett-Packard Co. CEO Carly Fiorina was nominated to challenge Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer in the fall.
It is the first time the California Republican Party has put a woman - much less two - at the top of its ticket.
Whitman congratulated Fiorina Tuesday night when she took the stage at the Universal City Hilton hotel ballroom.
"Career politicians in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., be warned: You now face your worst nightmare - two businesswomen from the real world who know how to create jobs, balance budgets and get things done."
Democrats and moderate independents comprise two-thirds of the electorate in California. Without a serious primary challenger, Brown has positioned himself as a moderate, pledging not to raise taxes and to make the kind of spending cuts that Whitman also campaigned on.
Whitman has already spent more than $81 million on her primary race, all but $10 million of it her own. She had previously said she would spend $150 million in all on her gubernatorial bid.
Brown will not be able to match Whitman's millions - he has $20 million in the bank so far - but is relying on Democratically aligned independent groups to fund an opposition campaign. Many of those groups are supported by public employee unions who bristle at Whitman's cost-cutting goals for state government. She has pledged to eliminate 40,000 state government jobs.
The U.S. Senate race also promises to be a high-dollar affair. Fiorina had spent $6.7 million by late May, while Boxer has $9.7 million cash on hand.

RINOS vs. Communists.
Tepid liberalism vs. scalding hot liberalism. Whitman is nothing more than The Jerkinator in drag.
California might not be dead but the coma seems intractable.
Exactly. I’m glad that Whitman and Fiorina both won for the simple reason that both candidates can self-fund their campaigns and will force the Dems to spend money and resources in a deep blue state.
I see where Orly got her empty blond head handed to her in the Secretary of State race. Hope she didn’t sink too much money into the victory party.
Condolences California.
What a terrible ticket we have in the GOP. We have no choice but to vote for them, but the RATS will have plenty of ammo to attack these two. I really think that Whitman will just turn into a good manager of a welfare state and a tax collector for the welfare state. Brown, on the other hand, will mismanage and perhaps drive the state into a complete financial melt down..so maybe Brown is the best choice.
Two billionaire globalists vs communists.
The only difference is they want global communism, not just domestic.
If they are elected, it’ll be Diane Feinstein all over again, voting to protect their global investments and kowtowing to communist dictators who keep their slave laborer wages low and provide communist educated workforce for their global companies.
You can vote for the American Independent party candidate in the general election.
No more holding noses and voting for global communists. Its time to stop that NOW.
The Dems are hoping conservatives vote for third parties. The time for idealogical battles is in the primaries. Conservatives need to get their act together. In Illinois, we had several conservatives running in the primaries. They cancel each other out and the GOP establishment candidate wins.
One California poster said that a democrat demanded a republican ballot at the poll yesterday just so he could vote for Fiorna.
You need to be careful what you are telling people to do. Fiorina is NOT conservative, she’s a globalist who believes the average person is better off as a ‘serf’ living in high density ‘workforce’ housing with no personal transportation. If this sounds to you like the free traitor version of Chinese communism, then you’d be right. Remember, Fiorna fired American citizens so HP could hire a communist educated Chinese workforce who work for pennies an hour and live in their own version of ‘workforce’housing which are called worker dormitories in China.
The republican leaders is nothing less than corrupt for putting up candidates like her.
