Philippine Elections: Aquino's Presidential Victory Confirmed, But Running Mate Loses

(RTTNews) - Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III has been declared winner of the Philippines presidential election, almost a month after the polls.

A Congressional Committee concluded Tuesday its official tally of votes count from the May 10 election.

The final count showed that Aquino secured more than 15 million votes, five-and-a-half million more than his nearest rival, former President Joseph Estrada.

However, his running mate Mar Roxas lost in a close fight to Estrada's Vice-President candidate Jejomar Binay. Binay garnered 14.6 million votes against the Aquino ally, who managed to win only 13.9 million votes.

The Committee will present its report on Wednesday to a joint session of Congress, which will ratify the electoral results.

In a country where elections are often marred by violence and followed by claims of cheating and vote rigging, with no obvious winner, this was comparatively peaceful, delivering a clear, decisive victory.

Aquino is scheduled to take over the presidency on June 30 from Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who was unable to vie for a third term, but won a seat in the House of Representatives, the Lower House of Parliament.

The 50-year-old son of popular former President Corazon Aquino vowed to fulfill his campaign promise to fight corruption and to probe the alleged involvement of Arroyo, her family and close friends in alleged anomalous government contracts.

The low profile legislator is faced with challenges to push his reform agenda, fight corruption and cut a large budget deficit.

The former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, successfully launched a political comeback of her family after 18 years winning a seat in the House of Representatives at the age of 80.

Her daughter Imee won governorship in Ilocos Norte province, the Marcos' political stronghold.

She was a shoe-in to be elected.

She was a shoe-in to be elected.

Comedy aside, she is a Congresswoman. All politics as Tip O' Neal would say, are local. Her consitutents at Leyte will continue to vote for her even when they know she stole the country's money as long as she delivers the goodies to them.

It's the same with the likes of Charles Rangel in Harlem. They will continue to vote for him even when they that know he cheats on his taxes. Heck, they'd vote for him even if there was a tape showing he killed someone in cold blood. The man has his seat for life.

I heard that the previous president ( Gloria Arroyo, who is term limited ) also got elected congresswoman representing her district.

She’s angling to be speaker of the house.
