No, they are not secretly hiding violent major crimes such as murder, rape and or robberies... as some have suggested...lol...

Los Angeles itself is reporting 50 year lows in crime rates...

No matter how you chop it up, these numbers are very impressive.

Interesting. But I would like to see more expert opinions — in addition to the dumb one cited in the article — that attempt to explain the trend.

Could be that many illegals left and went back to Mexico. And how did the crime rate fare in Mexico during this same time?

To what do they attribute these drops to? Nationally, rates have been going down for some time too.

Gee, I wonder if it has anything to do with the high % of illegals going back to Mexico since the US recession started in 2008?

The outstanding warrants in Los Angeles for murder are 80% illegals.

If the LAT reports it, it must be true! Their credibility is nearly as lacking as the NYT! Seriously, the timing of this report is suspect at best!

When the recession hit, a lot of illegal aliens went home. It’s interesting that crime in Mexico is up.

“We do have a lot of assaults in town because we have a lot of bars,” said Sgt. Andrew Goodrich, a Fullerton Police Department spokesman.

Has the number of bars increased?

Then what can this decline be attributed to? This makes bad press for the anti-gun rights crowd.

Violent crime down in San Gabriel Valley cities

05/24/2010

The amount of violent crime in the San Gabriel Valley's most populous cities dropped dramatically in 2009, according to 2009 crime figures released by FBI on Monday.

In West Covina, violent crime was down 21 percent, with 315 reported in 2009 compared to 398 in 2008.

The city brought back a crime analyst in 2008, which allowed the city to aggressively target certain areas and criminals, West Covina Police Chief Frank Wills said.

To what do they attribute these drops to?

Various thing...One of which is California has 3 strikes, and some of the toughest criminal penalties in the entire nation...

Lots of violent people left, as they were two time losers, with no 3rd chance.

This story comes at a time of growing anti-illegal sentiment, interestingly.

The primary motivation for the growing anti-illegal movement comes from - increasing crimes committed by illegals. This stat neutralizes those concerns.

Of course the LA Times would never shill for the open borders lobby.

Economy has a down-turn. Illegals pack up and go home. Crime drops. We’re supposed to be surprised by this.
