The night a torpedo-armed North Korean submarine allegedly sank a South Korean patrol ship, the U.S. and South Korea were engaged in joint anti-submarine warfare exercises just 75 miles away, military officials told The Associated Press.
The blast that sank the Cheonan, the worst South Korean military disaster since the 1950-53 Korean War, showed how impoverished nations such as North Korea can still inflict heavy casualties on far better equipped and trained forces, even those backed by the might of the U.S. military.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Friday that plans for more joint U.S.-South Korea anti-submarine exercises, announced after the sinking of the Cheonan, are on hold awaiting United Nations action on the incident.
In part, Gates said, there is concern about instigating another rash act by the North Koreans.
Two months after the sinking, U.S. officials for the first time disclosed details of the joint naval exercise held the same day as the attack on the Cheonan. Forty-six South Korean sailors died on the warship, which was not involved in the exercise but on routine patrol near disputed waters.
Military officials said the drill could not have detected Pyongyang's sub. Officials and defense experts said that a minisub would have been difficult for even a nearby ship to track in shallow coastal waters

This is one of the main entries on local tin-foil pinko crowds in S. Korea.

Associated Press is running with it too. Military.com would not run a story like that if was not true.

It is true that they had an exercise. However, tin-foilers claim that somehow a U.S. sub strayed out of the exercise and headed for Baekryong Island and sank Cheonan.
That is what I am talking about. They tried to tie naval exercises to torpedo attack on Cheonan. This version even says that U.S. did it on purpose to create crisis, in order to pull Japan back to U.S. fold and agree to allow U.S. bases in Okinawa.

Nobody really care what these “crackpots” have to say because there is overwhelming evidence that the North Koreans and not the US did it,

I know what you mean. When I said tin-foilers, I was having this mental picture of barely 20 something dorks spouting what they saw on Internet. There are indeed many like that. The ones who vowed to never eat American beef two years ago.

The ones who vowed to never eat American beef two years ago.Too bad they're hypocrites, otherwise they might go the whole nine yards and vow never to drink American water or breathe American air.
More's the pity.

One thing to notice as well...
The other media outlets (all of them, includiung FoxNews) are being careful, to NOT inflame the situation, by calling the South Korean a “ship”, not a “warship”...
I know its parsing words, but it is something I’ve noticed, and it looks deliberate...
Certainly don’t want to make the NK’s (and their supporters and apologists) angry or something...

I heard this story from a Chinese business associate about three days after the event. Let's pretend it is true. a crew of about 80 that know a torpedo was launched and about when it was launched. How long before that leaks out?

My brother is out there in S. Korea right now and he told me quite a few people are linking this attack to the Japanese PM stepping down over Okinawa.

Perhaps the UN would respond if there had been a Star of David on the sub or torpedo.

Yeah, there are people only trying to find faults with S. Korean gov and U.S., even though ‘lovely Obama’ is in charge.
They are acting out Carl Bernstein. We are the Nixon and his plumbers. LOL.

Gates was quoted as saying that China ending of joint US - China military co-operation did not make any sense. Hello, it is time to replace American military leadership. We need people who can put the head on the nail and call it for what it is. We need leaders who can respond to agression not sweep things under the carpet and pretend they don’t exist. We need military leadership to tell the American Public the truth about the War on Terror- that the threats are still active, regardless of what the current administration fails to believe or admit. We have a serious national security problem and instead of a buildup of forces they are slashing. China is building up and is not on our side. Got the memo- We must go it alone, if necessary with a New Continental Army. The federal government is corrupt and our alliegances compromised due to debt purchasing. Dissolve the union in favor a loose confederacy! We can and will Rise Again as a Republic and protector of individual liberties! We cannot allow a dual policy mentality regarding Taiwan - China and Radical Muslim countries to take over and destroy civilization as we know it. We are in the end game here our leadership needs to behave like it.
