As long as China has to “copy” technology we don’t have as much to worry about. Once they start “developing” their own technology, then we have something to worry about. Copied technology tells us they are one generation behind ours. Once they innovate on their own, they are on a par.
And they created a copy of a German motorcycle with a side car but who would want to own one.
Copying is a way of doing just that. Remember how the Toyota caught up, and lead?
I have a Chinese copy of an Ithaca 37 and it is actually quite good. Possibly not the very best barrel steel is the only deficiency people have noted. Mine seems fine.
Communists don’t have any conception of property rights of any kind. That is why they steal. When the only officially recognized property owner is the state, it is logical to steal from other countries in all ways, personal, industrial, intellectual and national.
Toyota still has yet to invent anything. What Toyota has done to compensate for their lack of innovation is to concentrate on quality. However, I was speaking more in the context of nations. The reality is that practically every major innovation in technology in the last 50 years has been developed in one country and one country only. Europe has not done anything major since the end of WW II. WW II put the nail on the European Coffin. Japan has not develoiped anything either. They wer good a copying and better quality. But look at where they are now. Same thing China. However, t5hat is not to say that policies being pursued by the current administartion may desatroyt that particular lead that we hold.
Do not confuse the capacity of a nation to manufacture products or to copy other’s innovations and refine them. The ability to invent and innovate is not something that is easily trasferable.
There is a real interesting story of the Tu-4 Bull and the B-29. In 1943, the then secret B-29 was leaked by Captain Eddie Rickenbacker during a government mission to Russia in 1943. The Russians wanted the plane as part of Lend-Lease but was denied by the United States. However, three B-29s were impounded by the Russians when they landed there. The three B-29s were named Ramp Tramp (42-6256), Ding Hao (42-6358), and The General H.H. Arnold Special (42-6365).Ramp Tramp was disassembled for examination and was the template.
I do agree on a Tupolev Bull as a B-29 knock-off but Conrord and ‘Concordsky’ are actually two different planes. Tu-144 first flew before Concord did.
