BP Captures Some Leaking Oil (This latest development may capture most of the oil leak)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 06/04/2010

BP PLC on Friday said some oil was flowing up a pipe from a cap it placed on its broken Gulf of Mexico well, but crude still spewed and it was unclear how much could be captured.

President Barack Obama was set to visit the Louisiana coast Friday, his second trip in a week and the third since the disaster unfolded following an April 20 oil rig explosion.

The government's point man for the crisis, Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, said the cap's installation atop a severed pipe late Thursday was a positive development but it was too early to tell how effective it will be in curtailing the nation's worst oil spill. The funnel-like lid is designed to channel oil for pumping to a surface tanker.

."Even if successful, this is only a temporary and partial fix, and we must continue our aggressive response operations at the source, on the surface and along the Gulf's precious coastline,'' Mr. Allen said in a statement.

BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said it will be later in the day before they know how much is being captured. "There is flow coming up the pipe. Just now, I don't know the exact rate," Mr. Suttles said on NBC's "Today" show.

Robots a mile beneath the Gulf positioned the lid over the main pipe on the leaking well Thursday night. Live video footage, though, showed that the oil seemed unimpeded. To put the cap in place, BP had to slice off the pipe with giant shears after a diamond-edged saw became stuck.

Mr. Suttles said some of the oil still pouring out came from vents deliberately placed to keep icelike crystals from forming that could block the funnel. BP will try to close those four vents and reduce the spill, he said.

According to Bloomberg :

TITLE : BP Says Cap May Collect More Than 90% of Oil Leak

By Jim Polson and Jessica Resnick-Ault

BP Plc may be able to capture more than 90 percent of the oil leaking from its Gulf of Mexico well with the cap it put in place last night.

“I’d like to see us capture 90-plus percent of this flow,” Doug Suttles, BP’s chief operating officer for exploration and production, said on CBS’s “Early Show” this morning. “That’s possible with this design. We have to work through the next 24 to 48 hours to optimize that.”

Oil is now venting from four valves in the cap that engineers expect to close today, Suttles said on CNN. The adjustable valves are intended to prevent clogging by icy gas hydrates that frustrated an initial attempt to contain the leak, he said. The cap was put atop the well to divert oil to ships on the surface.

I have heard that this was the solution that BP first proposed to the govies and was turned down.

It is never too late, Willie...unless of course, you have totally bought in to the "abandon all hope" mantra.

well, better late than never.

On a related note, can you are anyone tell us if they contain this leak, whether nature will ever heal itself from this oil slick ( is the damage permanent?). If so, what has been our past experience regarding how long before things return to the way they were before the oil slick happened... ANYBODY OUT THERE ??

BINGO! He did the same thing last Friday when they thought that the top kill might work in time for his photo op!

The man is nothing but an incompetent, narcissist, and sociopath!

” it is a good thing Obama is there today to take credit. “

Remember what happened the last time he went to the Gulf to take credit?? “Top Kill”, on which everyone had pinned such high hopes, failed while he was speaking!!

I have a sense of looming disaster...

how long before things return to the way they were before the oil slick happened... ANYBODY OUT THERE ??

During WWII, thousands of ships were sunk. Oil and fuel tankers were prime targets. Many of the vessels were fired on heavy oil, some on coal.

These ships were sunk both near coastlines and on the open seas. Cleanup crews weren't generally dispatched to clean up their oil slicks. Can't answer how long the damages affected us, but we did survive.

The Gulf of Mexico died after Ixtoc and never recovered. The shrimp and fish produced from there are only an illusion grown in secret government stock tanks. /s

What’s with all these ice crystals? Methane expansion?

Why can’t they pump steam down there to keep them from feoming?

Frankly, I think the libertarian "free market" types SHOULD abandon all hope.
After this screw up, there is absolutely no possibility of the Oil Industry getting away with a mere slap on the wrist. Defending the Oil Industry is a political liability for conservatives. We need to be proactive and lead our nation away from dependency on oil.
