Gurgling in a mix of wonder and joy, this is the incredible moment a child hears his mother's voice for the first time.
Eight-month-old Jonathan was born deaf and had cochlear implants put into his ears so he could hear.
His father filmed the tear-jerking moment they were turned on for the first time, capturing the amazement in the boy's face as he heard his mother's voice saying his name.

Deaf people have formed such a community in some places that they look upon someone curing deafness as robbing them of members of their culture.
I remember the hearing of two deaf parents with genetic defects screening their offspring to ensure that their child would inherit deafness. To them, it wasn't preferable to have a fully functioning child, it was more important to create a new member of their deaf culture.
Strange.
