Despite what headlines proclaimed as a GM success with May figures of a 17% increase year over year, GM's lackluster gains landed them in 11th position out of 15 auto manufacturers' gains in the same period. Apparently, this simply will not do for Obama's Government Motors. So a two pronged assault on competition has been in the works. Today, federal regulators (NHTSA) has announced they are launching an investigation into Ford for sudden acceleration after verifying three complaints. Yup... I said three complaints.
On other fronts, GM China (49% share), along with their majority venture partner SAIC, are hosting a forum at the Shanghai 2010 Auto Expo, called " Pathway to Sustainable Mobility Forum". They've also constructed a publication called Roadmap to 2030 Blue Paper, which they will not publish for public consumption until the forum's end in October 2010.
The infamous Pelosi little ditty INRE O'healthcare, "...we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it..." comes to mind here....
But what we *do* know about this GM led "Roadmap" is this.... it is intended to change consumer behavior, forcing them into electric cars, and will use the power of government and private enterprise in order to do so.
The "Drive to 2030": Sustainable Urban Mobility Forum series is being held in conjunction with World Expo 2010 Shanghai to address the role of business, government, urban design, energy diversity, consumer behavior, innovation, and advanced technology in creating a balanced and better future. GM and its Chinese partner, SAIC, are the joint global automobile partner of Expo 2010.Under the theme of Drive to 2030, they are introducing their vision of a future in which driving will be free from emissions, accidents, petroleum and congestion, as well as more enjoyable and fashionable than ever before.
The Roadmap to 2030 Blue Paper will draw together the thoughts of forum participants and highlight what needs to be done to make sustainable mobility a reality. GM is making individual chapters available online after the conclusion of each forum on its Expo 2010 website, www.gmexpo2010.com.
How wonderful... I can't wait. But let's go back first to the GM May numbers, and address a few facts that a glowing media opted to leave out of the headlines.
As I mentioned, 15 out 20 auto manufacturers enjoyed year over year gains in the May reports. Below, a snapshot from the AutoNews round up of May numbers.

When the hell is the former head of GM who got fired by that moron in the White House going to file a law suit against the Federal Government for losing his job unconstitutionally?
If GM was really doing well, then why is the Government going after Toyota and now Ford?? Who is next Kia?? Hyundai?? Nissan??
In other news, the Hyundai plant down the road can’t crank out Sonatas fast enough to keep up with demand. Will they start having “issues” soon?
If you don’t get three complaints in this litigious world, you’re not in business in the first place.
The 3 complaints are from the White House car pool.
They wont stop until all business is ruined by them, thats the only way the duh bummers can win
So I'm thinking when they say "enjoyable", they're talking about something more along the lines of being more self-oriented, i.e. better entertainment choices like being able to surf the web while stuck in traffic or some crap, which means they're aiming for the magnetic-road pod from "Minority Report":
Yep, my wife is due for a new car in the not too distant future, and you pegged it. There won’t be a new GM under her tree.
Sorry GM employees, but the price was just too high, and I’m not talking about cars.
Which, not coincidentally, is drive-by-wire and computer controlled (partially externally, to manage traffic better), so it won’t be you “driving”. You’ll input your destination, and the “system” will take you where you want to go (or where they want you to go, if you step out of line in some way).
No thanks. Throttle-by-wire is about as disconnected from the machine as I care to be, and even that is pushing it a bit (though it does make motorcycles a bit more exciting by letting more of the power get to the ground).
Well hell, my 2010 MUstang GT has Sudden Acceleration every single time I step on the gas!!!!!!! AND I LIKE IT THAT WAY!
I’ll bet Honda is next.
We haven’t bought an GM car since 1986 when they gave us the finger. Bought a lemon and the dealer said so long after the 12K mile warranty had expired. We told the dealer that we would never buy a GM car again. He didn’t care.
Two issues:
1. a crappy product.
2. lousy service.
Good riddance.
Yep... Watch some car companies shut down if this crap still happens..
If I needed a truck GM would need a look.
I don’t need a truck, so no look.
We switched to Honda (for the past 20 years), also an 08 BMW and my commuter car, an 09 Hyundai.
