AT&T announced today that they are ending their unlimited 3G data phones. As Dan Indiviglio wrote for our site, this is not a bad thing for most smartphone users, who don't chew through anything like the new 2 GB cap on their premium data plan. But it may be a problem for iPad users, several million of whom just bought the things on the assumption that they'd be able to do a whole lot of data-intensive browsing. iPad users don't have contracts; they're allowed to purchase by the month. They're feeling a bit burned, given that the company seems to have waited until the first great wave of iPad buying ended.

We’ve been thinking about switching to Straight Talk through Walmart. It uses the Verizon network. Any users out there want to comment? I’d like to know what it’s like before I buy.

Bait, meet switch.Yup. I smell lawsuits.
I realize that companies write into the contracts that things may change. However, when the change to the contract is such that you would never have entered into a contract under the newly written terms, I think you'd have a way to get out of any early termination fees if you went elsewhere.

Limited data plans are not the future in this industry. I’m glad I went to Verizon a month ago.

I am right now trying to figure out whether to get an Ipad with its limitations, or wait for a new tablet PC such as the Notion - Ink Adam (which may be vaporware). Now, I will wait and see.

To be fair, the new limited plans only affect 'new' customers, not customers who already have unlimited plans. That said, I echo what another poster said, that this is not the way to go moving forward if you want to keep competitive. AT&T would rather restrict access and charge huge overage fees, than spend the money to upgrade their network.
I've been seriously contemplating switching to Sprint now that they have the newer 4G Android phones coming out, and considering I live in one of their 4G domains.

Loves me some Verizon! We have cell service in the most insanely remote places as well as off the coast. It just works!

I have had Sprint for many years, and even with a few “issues” I have come to the conclusion that all carriers have their issues.
They offer the best value out there. I have unlimited data, and EVERY call to and from another cell phone is free...doesn’t matter what carrier. (no I don’t work for them! LOL)
I can’t stand Apple because of their tying you to only their products and only ATT and I’m glad they are getting stabbed in the back.
