Steve Jobs assertion that personal computers running Microsofts Windows operating system are in a permanent decline has been met with surprising agreement.
In an onstage interview at the D: All Things Digital conference on Tuesday night, Mr Jobs, chief executive of Apple, said Windows computers would decline in popularity as people used other means to connect to the internet, consume content and work.
He compared the PC with trucks, saying that the vehicles were pervasive when most people lived on farms, but faded in importance as most of the population moved to cities and suburbs. Some people still want trucks, and a fraction will still want PCs, Mr Jobs said: One out of every x people.
Executives and other technology and entertainment companies who heard Mr Jobs speak at the conference appeared to agree, pointing to the rapid spread of smartphones and internet-connected devices, including those made by Apple and Google.
He is pretty clear about its over, and it is, said Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive of DreamWorks Animation, who added that he himself had stopped using a laptop in favour of an Apple iPad and a BlackBerry, made by Research in Motion.
Mr Jobs cited security issues, poor battery life and difficulty in use as drawbacks to the PC laptop. The iPad has no attached keyboard and is not designed for creating material, but Mr Jobs said the device would evolve.
One senior technology executive at a large movie and television company said that as long as Apples operating system for the iPad and iPhone relied on finger-touches, instead of the precision of mouse clicks and cursors, office workers would do detailed work on other devices.

Wasn't the telephone developed just for that purpose???
I’ve always hated Microsoft. Their products were never as good as the original products whose ideas they stole before crushing those competitors with the good original products.
Microsoft is successful because they are ruthless, not because they ever built a better mousetrap.
Like Microsoft or not they’re going to be around a while. Windows 7 is not only stable out of the box but can be made to look exactly like XP/2000, and that means particularly for businesses the transition won’t be so difficult when support for XP finally runs out. All of my older programs installed on it except for one no problem, including my fossil printers and a scanner.
I think Mr. Jobs would like nothing more than to see Vista after Vista.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
I realize you are supposed to print the legend and not the truth, but really isn’t it time for this particular one to die?
As a current user of Windows 7, Windows XP, Ubuntu 10 and OS X Snow Leopard, I must disagree. OS X has it, easily, Windows 7 next, XP after that, but Ubuntu is finally just about there with XP.
So what is your current OS experience to be able to make your comparative statement?
And oh..Win 7 sold a staggering 100 MILLION units in just 2 months.
Uh, no. Windows 7 sold that much in about six months, mainly due to the fact that OEMs started mostly shipping Windows 7 to their buyers by default. Still, it was a much better situation than Vista, where consumers were demanding "downgrades" to XP from the OEMs.
You gotta be kidding me.
I have an XP laptop, Vista on another (dual boot with Win 7) and Win 7 on my newest toy.
Win 7 blows them all out of the water on performance and everything else.
For starters, XP is not even close to being as secure as Vista and Win 7 are. There is a reason why Microsoft's satisfaction ratings with users has SHOT UP to its highest levels ever, since Win 7 came out. The consumer is the ultimate arbiter of these things.
Windows 7 helps Microsoft hit record customer satisfaction score
I don't think so. HP had one planned, and Microsoft did, too. Then they were dumped when the iPad took off. They realized that a consumer tablet is no place for a desktop OS with touch or pen tacked on, and that's a big reason while previous attempts failed in the market.
No, the consumers have decided that a tablet should have a simple handheld OS. It's quite possible there will be a Windows Phone 7 tablet. However, the OS will be far behind the competition even when it is finally released.
I can browse the web on my phone, mp3 player and my netbook, why would I need a much more limited and costly touchscreen pad there to be something more to lug around.
Consolidate. I'd use the phone for calls and music, and the tablet would replace the netbook for surfing, email and watching movies (all things that benefit from a larger screen).
I notice you make no statement of OS X or Linux usage. Therefore, you are not qualified to make a statement of which OS among them is best. You can only say which current Microsoft OS you think is best, and I do agree with you on that.
I don't need to use OSX to know that Win 7 is rock solid, super secure, fast and a dream to use.
Wouldn't touch OSX even if I had a gun pointed at me head. I don't need it for anything, Win 7 does everything I need and more.
In addition, I don't ned to use SX to know that OSX doesn't run MW2, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2 and a a whole host of AAA games out of the box. Win 7 does. It's the best gaming OS on the planet.
“Windows 7 sold that much in about six months,”
Fine. That's stil more than all the Apple macs sold in the last 10 years, and beats total sales of the iPhone and iPod Touch combined snce launch.
“mainly due to the fact that OEMs started mostly shipping Windows 7 to their buyers by default.”
Ummm..OEM’s shipped Vista and XP as default too, and still never came even close to that number of sales in that time period. Plus of course Apple ship their latest OSX with their new computers too. I don't see you whining about that.
Plus Win 7 had massive preorders as stand alone units(not shipped with computers). In the UK...
Windows 7 has beaten boy wizard Harry Potter to become the biggest pre-order product of all time in the UK, says Amazon.
The UK arm of the retail behemoth adds that the new operating system sold more copies in the first eight hours of its release in July than Vista did in its entire pre-order period. The new OS launches officially tomorrow (October 22).
“The launch of Windows 7 has superseded everyone’s expectations, storming ahead of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as the biggest grossing pre-order product of all-time at Amazon.co.uk, and demand is still going strong,” says Brian McBride, Amazon UK MD

Those are not OEM buys. Those are Win 7 fans actually buying the product. Get it?
Windows XP is still a better choice than Win7, at least on my boxes. It’s obviously faster, lighter, and more responsive. It has a smaller footprint and just about every program imaginable will install on it. What Windows 7 does for Microsoft is keep them in the game since it’s not Vista and for the most part works.
I don't have to use a Trabant before I know it's sucky car.
Equally, if my car is very reliable, and has never given me any trouble since I bought it, and runs like a dream all the time, I don't ahve to use another car before I know my car is very reliable. You can't get better than 100% reliability.
” Therefore, you are not qualified to make a statement of which OS among them is best”
You bet I am.
Come to think of it, neither are you.
Would you go to Bin Laden for the definitive judgment call on the Bush Presidency?
Didn't think so.
Why on earth would anyone take seriously, the “judgment” of a guy, who is not only a rabid Applebot, he hardly ever posts on any other political threads at FR, apart from shilling 24/7 for Apple?
Of course you'd say OSX is better.
You've been doing that for months.
Chuckle!
So does XP and W2k. In fact Win 7 does nothing those don't when it comes to productivity. Since recycling operating systems while adding a new calculator and freecell game with ugly humongous default icons appears to be a profitable business model instead of having a willingness to support the older ones for a fee if necessary maybe what we all should do is become stockholders in their company and join the bandwagon.
That spike is understandable given the low uptake of Vista. People simply delayed their purchases until MS fixed the Vista problem. Win 7 seems to be a good OS after a dismal Vista product.
Nope.
XP is far less secure than Vista or Win 7. I still remember the daily headline stories of Windows security break in's back in 2001,2002, 2003, 2004 in the years after XP was launched
“In fact Win 7 does nothing those don't when it comes to productivity.”
Oh yes it does.
Consumers(the ultimate judges on the matter), think so too:
“Windows 7 helps Microsoft hit record customer satisfaction score”
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2515919/posts
When consumers give you the highest satisfaction ratings ever, after Win 7 has taken just 11% of the Windows OS market, that is powerful , incontrovertible proof!
Yeah?
Vista sold very well actually. It was the fastest selling OS in history at the time too:
Windows Vista sells 40 million licenses in 100 days the fastest in history
Microsoft head honcho Bill Gates said that an accelerating consumer shift to digital lifestyles had helped make the operating system the fastest selling in history, and the more expensive premium edition accounted for nearly 78% of Vista sales. Introduced in Jan 30, Microsoft has managed to sell an astounding 40 million licenses or about 400,000 licenses a day”

I put Win7 on my Macbook Pro as it runs faster, more stable, and has better battery life.
End user management, content filtering, group policy changes, and server side resource management on the XServs in OD is a friggin' nightmare. Linux is easier to manage for that matter.
Win 2008R2 and Win 7 Pro are the shiznit from an Admins standpoint.
Vista was a half-step off of being outright Malware.
