GOP candidate Tom Campbell pulls TV ads for U.S. Senate race in California

Capitulating to his dwindling campaign treasury, Republican Senate candidate Tom Campbell pulled his television advertising Tuesday and in the closing days of the primary race will rely on Internet appeals and telephone calls to make his case to GOP voters.

The move creates an enormous hurdle for the former congressman at a time when his chief rival, Carly Fiorina, has loaned several million dollars to her campaign and, on the strength of a generous round of TV ads, has shot ahead in what was once a close contest to replace Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer.

Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard Co., was leading Campbell, 38% to 23%, in a Los Angeles Times/USC poll released Sunday. State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore of Irvine was trailing in third place.

Larry Gerston, a professor of political science at San Jose State, called Campbell's decision to yank his ads "as close as you get to the white flag of surrender."

Strategy

Republican Senate candidate Tom Campbell’s campaign will rely on Internet appeals and plans to target likely voters with automated calls offering a live telephone question-and-answer session with him. (Robert Gauthier, Los Angeles Times / May 3, 2010)

Interesting as I have not seen a single ad for Campbell. I wonder where he was advertising.

I hope Devore can pull out a surpise win, but it looks like at least Campbell is going down.

I also have not seen a single Campbell ad. Statewide campaigns in CA are expensive. Witness Whitman’s $80 million contribution to her campaign, which was the reason Campbell switched from the race for Governor to the Senate race. He knew he could not compete with two billionaires. It now appears that he could not compete with one millionaire.

Campbell = RINO 1
Fiorina = RINO 2
Devore = Conservative

Something tells me that if Tom Campbell wasn’t pro-gay-marriage, pro-partial-birth-abortion and anti-Zionist he would have found it easier to compete with a millionaire candidate.

Yes, good news indeed. Campbell is a major league pro-abort and champion of gay marriage. A disaster for conservatives.

Fiorina has been endorsed by the California Pro-Life Council as well as the Susan B. Anthony List. She has a better chance than Devore to beat Boxer, in my opinion.

I know a lot of people here don't much like Fiorina, but this sounds like a classic half-a-loaf opportunity. The whole nation will heal faster if Boxer is expelled.

Agreed. I live here, and I can tell you “Call me Senator” Boxer simply MUST go at all costs.

Why has devore not gotten any traction?

He’s the most conservative.

Agreed.

If we have both Whitman and Fiorina as nominees, the “women CEO” aspect will come to the forefront.

California conservatives are a distinct minority.

The CA Republicans are nearloy as liberal as their Democrat cousins. Just favor slightly lower taxation

We are talking about CA. There’s a LOT of work to do there in communicating the powerful conservative vision. I can say the same about my home state of Washington.

CA is a Blue state. Conservatives have to settle for what they can realistically get. RINOs in Blue states and Conservatives in Red states. That is the only way we will get the number of Senators that we will need to turn back the harm that Obama and Progressives have done to America.

I’ve seen Campbell ads on Comcast’s Fox News feed.
But they’ve been few and far between compared to every other candidate, including DeVore.

Campbell’s ad focused on attacking Boxer and saying she’s been in playing partisan politics for 24 years and it’s time for her to go.

Great comments. FReepers want to attack the 2nd-most conservative instead of going after the out-and-out RINO. Getting into a pissing match with Carly will just allow Campbell to take the high road and waltz into the nomination. If DeVore would have went after Campbell and Boxer and just ignored Carly, he would probably be in the lead now.
