PARIS Samantha Stosur of Australia started strong, pounding the ball from corner to corner and running top-seeded Serena Williams to distraction, but Williams, smacking aces at key moments, would not yield. Their quarterfinal French Open duel lurched forward as a contest of will and power.
In the end, it was Stosur who prevailed in a fiercely fought 6-2, 6-7 (2), 8-6 victory to advance to the semifinals.
Stosurs two remarkable crosscourt passing shots a forehand and a backhand, both on the run led to her final push, breaking Williamss serve and stepping her into the lead, 7-6, in the final set, where there are no tiebreaks.
The loss dashed Williamss hopes of regaining the French Open crown she won in 2002.
Stosur, seeded seventh, broke Williamss serve in the sixth game of the first set, then slammed forehands and sliced serves to go up, 5-2, ending the game with an emphatic ace up the middle.
Within a minute, the agile Australian claimed the set. Williams looked unsettled, appearing unable to handle Stosurs sliced backhands.
Both stayed on serve in the second set, but Stosur was always in the lead and as they moved into the eighth game, Williams began to face a series of break points. Suddenly, with a double fault and two unforced backhand errors, she had dropped her serve and trailed, 5-3.
Stosur stepped to the service line to claim the match. An unforced error and a double fault put her down, 0-30. Stosur battled back, forcing two more backhand errors and pulling to 30-30. It was too late, Williams charged forward, winning the game on a swinging half-volley to Stosurs forehand side for which there was no answer.

Good
Now I am glad anytime one of the Williams’ sisters loses. Just really tired of their antics and attitudes. They are older and not invincible anymore, and actually for tennis to continue to be interesting and worth watching, for the sport itself, it’s better that new up and comers can win against them.
LOL GMTA!
thanks for the pic.
Looks like she has to pee really bad.
looks like looter dude
Or something ... either way it’s racquet abuse.
;)
I have a very strong feeling Serena isn’t liked in these parts.
She needs to take a lesson from Venus (and a few other tennis divas) and succumb to an “injury” if it looks like she might suffer an embarassing loss....
Like their Dad, the Williams sisters are nuts.
But I did enjoy watching the Europeans recoil as two American black women dominated tennis for a decade.
She could play safety in NFL :-)
