Gov. Rick Perry, reiterating his concerns about a federal takeover of education, gave the final word today that Texas will not apply for the second round of a federal grant worth up to $700 million for local schools.
Perry refused to compete for the first round of the Race to the Top grant in January, but had not definitively said the state would sit out round two. The Republican governor repeatedly has criticized President Barack Obama's education grant because it favors states that adopt common curriculum standards.
This administration's attempt to bait states into adopting national standards is an effort to undermine states' authority to determine how their students are educated and is clearly aimed at circumventing laws prohibiting national standards, Perry said in a statement.

Too bad Texas can’t get the taxes they paid towards this back too. but it’s a start.
This at a time when the nation is ridiculing Texas for having state curriculum standards.
Why should a follower of Bill Ayers be able to dictate the agenda for public schools from coast to coast?
Why should the champions of Reds like Howard Zinn be permitted to indoctrinate America's youth to hate this nation?
This is something for the Central Planners to really fear. The children of Texas might actually get a useful education.

We keep doing the right thing for education, but I wonder for how many more years. Perry will probably win in November, but he could be the last. The Democrap liberal nutball faction unfortunately appears to be growing in the state.
Only a fool would be believe Rick Perry...
This is the same moron who pushed the North American Union and NAFTA Superhighway....both things would have surrendered Texas soverignty to big government entities....really big government entities
Perry is an America-hating, Texas-hating Globalist. Believing he believes in small government is foolish
Perry isn’t my favorite person but to think he is anywhere as bad as you paint him is ridiculous.
Good for you, Rick. Some Republicans are beginning to get it.
Thanks stevie_d_64.
Texans are very fortunate to have a governor who stands up for states rights. Our governor and secretary of education in WA, urged all state school districts to sign on to the race to the top plan, telling them that they had to sign on so they could find out what it entails, just like Pelosi and the Obamacare bill.

Perry is not doing this because he particularly cares about education or states rights, he’s doing it because he likes his job.
He knows that if he gives in, it’s his political suicide.
