Al and Tipper Gore, whose playful romance enlivened Washington and the campaign trail for a quarter century, have decided to separate after 40 years of marriage, the couple told friends Tuesday.

In an “Email from Al and Tipper Gore,” the couple said: “We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate.

“This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.”

That's a bit silly. They are public figures. It's always open season. There is no way this could be kept "private", so asking that "privacy is respected" is the only proactive thing that they could have done.

And I personally do respect their privacy. It is their marriage and their problem and I would deplore using such an event as an opportunity to score cheap political points. I'm sorry the marriage seems to be struggling, but it is none of my business.

What hacks me off is that the same courtesy is not extended to public figures on the right who go through private crises of some kind (e.g. Sarah Palin and her daughter's pregnancy).

Ahh, they’re trying to keep it under wraps. What we need to do is watch the filings for the public companies that Gore’s investment partnership is involved in - if my guess is correct that he’s basically going to pay her off big time, there will be changes in effective control of some of those securities that will have to be oh-so-quietly reported to the SEC.
