Al and Tipper Gore, whose playful romance enlivened Washington and the campaign trail for a quarter century, have decided to separate after 40 years of marriage, the couple told friends Tuesday.
In an “Email from Al and Tipper Gore,” the couple said: “We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate.
“This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.”

Probably not a 40-year marriage in the traditional sense, only the legal sense. These types of “marriages” tend to wither on the vine over a long period of time. One suspects they stayed together for the kids and for political reasons but once those issues were in the past, I think they probably have been mentally (and more) separated for the past decade or so. This is just making the reality formal.
It was surprising to me, too, and handled very well. Whatever we may think of their politics and related activities, they ARE entitled to privacy.

I’ve always suspected that Tipper was a closet conservative.

It is sad when a marriage doesn’t work. I saw my mom go through two divorved. I had my dad who was no longer around much. and then I ended up with an EX STEP DAD. It is a mess..
I told Donna (my wife) when we got married that she is stuck with me for life. I am never going to put our girls through that shit.
Tipper has finally demonstrated relatively good judgment! Hats off to her walking away from a Raging Lunatic finally...:-)

That really is a goofy statement that shows you to be stuck in a comfortable bubble and out of touch with reality. I’ve meant plenty of people who were wrong as they could be politically but had nice decent family lives and were nice decent people. Only a loon would think otherwise.
