NATO to meet Tuesday on Gaza flotilla raid by Israel

BRUSSELS: NATO will hold emergency talks on Tuesday at Turkey's behest after the deadly Israeli raid on a flotilla of aid-carrying ships bound for Gaza, spokesman James Appathurai said.

"Planning is underway for a meeting... at the request of the Turkish authorities tomorrow afternoon," Appathurai said. The talks will gather ambassadors from the 28 NATO member countries at its Brussels HQ.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters in Santiago, Chile, that his government was demanding the NATO council gather to address a crisis that has already seen Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a visit to Canada and Washington where he had been due to meet with US President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

“Turks Greeks and Italians were openly invading israeli territory.”

Not if Israel boarded them on INTERNATIONAL WATERS. Israel should have waited.

They better “find” weapons, which might be there. Hard to say. Could be one of the most stupid things they’ve done. Would normalize Hamas’ acts.

Not important anymore. Most of the world has allready formed an oppinion on this. If they really find weapons the media will just say that Israel placed it there afterward.
They allready lost the global PR “game”.

Your half wrong posted above it appears :)

South Korea isn’t a NATO member, UN would deal with them. Turkey that has beef with Israel will claim that Israel attacked Turkish ships in international waters. Greece and Italy might too. No one expects NATO to declare war on Israel but you can’t board a NATO member’s ships just like that.

Israel screwed up big time, time to admit it and go into damage control.

Would you sit by and let it happen, unchallenged?

I don’t think you would. I don’t think other people would either.

AHH please don´t ask me this question ;-)
I´m from europe and i´m not pro Israel nor i am pro palestinians (i would hate to be forced to take a side).
I try to stay neutral on this conflict and see the facts without emotions.
greetings

Congress would not do that and that is what it would take to go to war with Israel.

One of the stupefying things I occasionally encounter is lefties whining about Israeli control of propaganda, the Pally story is never heard, etc. If anything, the Israelis are the worst at explaining themselves. It allows the world to imagine that Gazans are starving, etc. and that Egyptians and the most Arab states are for the “blockade” to since Hamas allied with the enemy Iran.

No choice. If you don't board and search a blockade runner, you've legitimized his action. Even if he wasn't carrying contraband, his next shipment will. Running a blockade is an act of war. The Israelis would have been within their rights to simply blow the ships out of the water.

I agree with whoever said that NATO will never scramble a force to aid Hamas terrorists. It's not that Obongo and the Euroweenies might not be tempted to make a stupid decision like that. It's that, in the individual countries, the soldiers and citizens will ask, "So, why are we in Gaza?" It's one thing to be afraid to publish pictures of Mohammed. But enthusiasm for dying for the greater glory of Hamas is another thing entirely. The NATO armies are a mixed bag, but they are not populated with the likes of Major Hasan or St. Pancake.

I agree Israel has screwed it up big time! why didn´t they just wait untill this flotilla entered teritorial waters???
They would had any right to board them. But in international waters?

They haven’t screwed anything up. They are protecting sovereign waters. They were offered to be taken to port and have their cargo inspected. They tried to run the gauntlet. They are damn lucky the IDF has restraint. I would have sunken all the vessels and denied any knowledge of the situation. How many times must Israel show restraint? Israel is DAMN tired of folks resupplying the Hamas terrorists with weapons and have said ENOUGH!

Sorry but you are wrong because how do you protect soverein waters as long as you are in international waters?
This is exactly the failure they made.
It would not be this big deal if they would have raided them inside teritorial waters.

As I've stated previously today, this was a planned provocation. Will the marxists bow to the muslims demands, or will the west do the right thing and simply issue a statement supporting Israel?

Even though Israel did the right thing, this will not turn out well for them, and again, it was by design. I would posit that the planning for this originated at 1600 Pennsylvania...

The INTENT was the same. The flotilla PLANNED this in advance. They were surprised in the darkness of the night by an advanced opponent. The IDF were attacked as they dropped to the deck to inspect the vessel with less than lethal weapons. Look at the videos. Look at all of them. The IDF has documented their actions and the actions of the flotilla for all to see. Now let’s see who lies.

Nonsense. The entire world knew that the flotilla was going to attempt to break the blockade. International waters vs territorial waters is simply splitting hairs and has little to no bearing on what was going to happen, one way or another.

Of course this was planned but you have to admit that Israel has done a hell of a job to fall into this trap!!!
I mean come on 10 people dead in international waters?
(in theory the IDF commited an act of piracy and even if this people had weapons they would have been allowed to use them against the IDF under international law). Why was it so difficult to just wait untill they reach teritorial waters? Now it looks like Israel just pi$$es on international law. And more important there was really no need to do this because all they would had to do would have been wait a few hours untill they enter Israeli waters and all would have been fine.

So I guess Iran should just blow up any US Ship in international waters to ‘defend itself’?

You talk as if this a spectacular court case that hinges upon the definition of specific notions and clauses in ironclad treaties. I simply don't see it as such, and I doubt that Israel is worried about it in such light either.

Of course they did not fall into a trap. Their hand was forced and they took the only action that was basically available to them.

Does not the U.S. interdict drug runners outside of our territorial waters? I believe we most certainly do. Why have we not been hauled into the ICC or some other such legal institution for those actions?

In the end, waiting for them to get too close to shore would be a bad idea in my opinion, for various reasons. Israel did the right thing, in the right place, at the right time, IMO.
