Ashburn talks gay rights on Senate floor
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 27, 2010 | Patrick McGreevy

Two months after announcing he was gay, state Sen. Roy Ashburn of Bakersfield discussed his sexuality on the Senate floor and cast votes on two separate gay-rights bills. Ashburn was the only Republican senator to vote in support of allowing openly gay people to serve in the military, but he also voted against a bill that could remove a political obstacle to proposals to legalize same-sex marriage. Ashburn then took the unusual step of publicly explaining his votes on the Senate floor. "I would not have been speaking on a measure dealing with sexual orientation ever prior to the events that have transpired in my life over the last three months,’’ Ashburn told his colleagues. "However, I am no longer willing or able to remain silent on issues that affect sexual orientation and the rights of individuals. And so I am doing something that is quite different and foreign to me, and it’s highly emotional.’’ Ashburn, who has regularly voted against gay rights bills in the past, announced he is a homosexual in March after he was arrested for drunk driving after he allegedly left a gay nightclub. He has said his past votes reflect his constituents’ votes, but said Thursday "The public supports allowing openly gay people to serve in the military.’’ The resolution passed the state Senate on a vote of 24-7. Ashburn said being gay did not affect one’s ability to serve in the military. "The current policy of 'don’t ask, don’t tell’ is clearly out of date and discriminatory,’’ he said.

This is precisely why I am against homosexual activist groups like GOProud or 'Log Cabin' which insist they can separate their lifestyle choice and their politics. In every case, once a politician openly embraces the homosexual lifestyle, he starts voting with their agenda. Ashburn is a perfect example of how this corruption occurs.

right lets get this right for the resident pervert trolls

we are talking about two men wanting to insert their penis into another mans butt to get off sexually

now it is sick and unnatural plus why the hell should they be given rights based on that

I served and there is no way I or others i know would want homosexuals serving openly.

Someone anyone explain to me what “opening serve” means?
Every time I read “log cabin”, it makes me giggle because for some reason I think of swimming pool ‘tootsie rolls’.

Roy has a whole lot of other problems in his personal life and that’s typical of people who decide to use this construct as an easy way out of facing difficult circumstances and relationships. He’s an angry, bitter little man and I feel sorry for those around him.

they say their sex life is private but then say they want don’t ask overturned

don’t ask and you don’;t tell gives them privacy they have been saying they want for years so why should they now be shouting about what they are?

because if they get this then the next one will be we can die for the country but cannot get married in my state thus overturn DOMA

anyone thinking this will not hurt the military and this is their last request is delusional

“we are talking about two men wanting to insert their penis into another mans butt to get off sexually”

It is much worse than that. These are ‘men’ who are erotically stimulated by the contaminated fecal matter of other males and achieve sexual gratification through orally interacting with the waste elimination organ of human males. That is beyond disgusting and can be nothing other than a serious mental disorder.

I don't know much about this Ashburn fellow but I agree with your position on allegedly 'Republican' groups made up of those engaging in behavior that is the antithesis of what the vast majority of Americans consider normal, being part of the GOP 'big tent'.

As with purely race-based groups, the core reason for the group's identity soon trumps Republican political principles. When its homosexuality, this happens pretty quickly. Its unfortunate but no matter how you might feel about homosexual 'rights', experience shows that conservatives simply cannot sanction political ties with groups that are based on homosexual behavior. As you noted, this Ashburn situation proves it.

For some reason when I read that I thought of Mr. Conservative J.C. Watts, until a black ultra liberal socialist/communist ran for president.

The fags are everywhere. Don’t hand me that crap about only 2% being homosexual.

They are very vocal in pushing their lifestyle, but are most likely less than 2% of the population - a very miniscule behavior based lifestyle.

Living in New York City, it sometimes seems like half the male population is gay. In reality, the figure is about 2-3% nationally, and even in NYC, its estimated that the gay population is about 7-8%.
