Sarah Palin took to her Facebook account today to inform her readers that Joe McGinniss, an award-winning reporter and author, had rented the house next door.
I saw Ben Smith flag this earlier today but did not really appreciate how strange and, frankly, immature Palin's post was until I read it.
Palin informs her readers that McGinniss is "overlooking my children’s play area" and "overlooking Piper’s bedroom." Alternately sounding angry and mocking, she refers to "the family’s swimming hole," which at first reference sounds like she's accusing McGinniss of checking out the Palins in their bathing suits, until you realize the family's "swimming hole" is Lake Lucille. And she posts a photo of the space McGinniss is renting, captioning it, "Can I call you Joe?"
Can somebody explain to me how this isn't a despicable thing for Palin to do? She describes McGinniss as the author of "the bizarre anti-Palin administration oil development pieces that resulted in my Department of Natural Resources announcing that his work is the most twisted energy-related yellow journalism they’d ever encountered."
Another way of putting it would be that McGinniss is an investigative journalist who wrote his first best-seller at age 26 and was shopping a book about Alaska and the oil industry when Palin was named John McCain's running mate. And another way of describing those "bizarre" pieces is that no one has ever challenged the facts in them.
Palin, who has an undergraduate degree in journalism, should understand that articles don't become untrue when the subjects don't agree with them.
Has McGinniss gone to an extreme to get a story? Well, we don't have his side yet -- not that this has prevented every other media outlet from typing up Palin's Facebook post like some lost Gospel.....

Exactly, so it is laughable to see them crying over a few comments made by Sarah.

In a message posted by his son, Joe McGinniss Jr. on Facebook, the writer asks for ideas for his next book, saying, “The last three books I’ve written have been about soccer, which nobody in America cares about; horse racing, which nobody in America cares about; and true crime, a genre that expired sometime last century . . . Let me know if you think of something.”
Sounds like he did. But wait, there’s more:
McGinniss says freelancing hasn’t worked out: “Some of you may have seen my cover story on Sarah Palin and the Alaska gas pipeline for Portfolio . . . At least they paid well, which not many places do any more. Among those that don’t is The Daily Beast. I recently wrote a short piece for them . . . They said they’d pay $250. But then they said they’d only pay if I signed an agreement that is the nuttiest, most onerous, restrictive contract I’ve seen in 40 years . . . I said I couldn’t sign it . . . and, of course, never got paid.”

Maybe he’ll see Weigel’s piece and write a headline “Creepy blogger supports the Creepy author writing about Palin — moves next door to her!”
Weigel’s journalistic ethics are evidently no better than McGinniss’s.

Doherty met her eventual husband, the writer Joe McGinniss, at a celebrity-studded book party at the Warwick Hotel in January 1970. That connection gave her entrée to many places, including Vietnam, where she spent four weeks in 1971 working as a photographer, a deeply affecting experience. “We were ‘in country,’ not in immediate combat, but there was always a sense of danger from snipers and landmines,” she recalled. The wrongness of the war became obvious to her on a gut level. “I looked around, and everything American, from Coke cans to bomb craters, looked completely wrong and out of place.”
She and McGinniss settled in New Jersey in 1970. After a stint freelancing, she began writing features and taking accompanying photographs for the Philadelphia Bulletin. “I got to spend time with a lot of prominent folks—from Senators Bob Dole and Joe Biden to famed cook James Beard to humorist Art Buchwald. It was great fun.” When McGinniss got a contract to write about Alaska in 1976, they spent a year in Anchorage, where she wrote for the Anchorage Daily News.
She won the American Bar Association Gavel Award and the American Trial Lawyer Association First Prize in 1977 for a series of pieces she wrote about an Alaskan pipeline worker who died in jail. Returning to New Jersey, the couple married, and Doherty took a job as managing editor for New Jersey Monthly. In 1980 they moved to Williamstown, Massachusetts. Doherty continued writing and editing, started a portrait photography business, read manuscripts for Book-of-the-Month Club, and did community work. But her own work took a backseat to her roles as mother of two boys and as wife to a controversial writer.
Joe McGinniss is the author of ten previous books. He has five children and seven grandchildren. He lives in Massachusetts with the writer and editor Nancy Doherty
I like the way you think...LOL.
She looks and seems rather unattractively normal for an over-achiever. I have to wonder what she thinks about his unhealthy obsession with Sarah.
Or any writer renting the house next door to write about and spy on Obama and his children, or Sestak and his wife and little daughter. Name a family man democrat. The press would go bezerk.
