Kurtz Questions Whether CNN Business Strategy 'Viable'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

It's turned into something of a week for TV hosts, if not to bite, then at least to nibble hard on the hands that feed them . . .

First, as noted here, on Friday Joe Scarborough passed along the comment of an unnamed conservative biggie who wondered "what the hell [Rand Paul] was doing on MSNBC?", where during an interview with Rachel Maddow he caused controversy with his comments on the Civil Rights Act.

Today, it was Howard Kurtz's turn. In the wake of Campbell Brown's withdrawal from CNN, in which she cited her show's poor ratings, Kurtz, host of Reliable Sources also on CNN wondered whether the network's business strategy of offering news in contrast to the opinion-oriented programming on Fox News and MSNBC is "viable." For good measure, Kurtz also managed to suggest that Brown, Connie Chung and Paula Zahn—all of whose CNN shows failed—weren't strong enough personalities to attract an audience during the 8 PM hour, up against the likes of O'Reilly and Olbermann. Ouch!

Rand Paul should avoid MSNBC, CNN and the others.

Can we at last put to bed that myth that Republican elites aren't ideologues and they just want to get Republican elected? They are big government socialists just like the democrats and they will stomp on any Republican that doesn't share their ideology.

passed along the comment of an unnamed conservative biggie

“Rand Paul should avoid MSNBC, CNN and the others.”

Why? He is either speaking his mind or he isn’t. Avoiding taking on the issues as they are is a liberal trick. Ducking them will only play into their hands. Take them on.

All ten of their viewers can be pissed and the MSM can try to blow it up, as they have, but when people see the clips they realize they are being had by the MSM again. That crap they ran on the Sun Morning shows was embarrasing, even to them. No one had a daming clip. The voters in the middel see these asshats for what they are and they are the only ones that count. The 25% that approve of Obama are so far gone nothing will reach them anyway.

Plus, he said what he said.

What will be funny...is if they throw a lot of money at this and then wake up to discover the viewer numbers don’t change, then they can only come to one conclusion...they are already like Fox and MSNBC...and they can’t improve their numbers.

My advice for CNN...keep Larry King as long as you can...because he’s the only bread winner in your stable. After that...you’ve got major problems.

If CommieNewsNet wants to survive, they’re going to have to out-fox FoxNews.

Lots of Freepers asked themselves the same question.

As you well know “personality” has not alot to do with it. Carrying Obama’s bucket of government control has everything to do with it. The contents are spilling out and towlie is in rehab.

Olbermann? Keith Olbermann? Is the author of this article seriously trying to portray that Doofus as a ratings giant?

Hahaha! Oh, please...

Speaking your mind is fine. Having your words twisted to mean what they don't mean is another.
The lesbian b**** continued to put words in Rand Paul's mouth, trying to make him out to be some kind of out and out racist, who is against civil rights for blacks. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Plus why waste time on MSNBC anyways? Few people watch that channel, and out of those few people, 99% of them are extreme left 0bamabots, who'd never vote for any Republican anyways.

It was refreshing to hear Rand Paul speak the plain truth about what he believes. We haven't heard an honest statement from a politician in decades.

The facts support his statement that it is not a good idea to undermine private business owners rights. Look what has happened since the Fed found out it can walk all over anything privately owned, from land to small business.

Yes, the question was a trap, and no matter what his answer the left would have made a spectacle of that answer. Personally I think he handled it well. As far as how well he can represent his state, I don't see how he could do worse than the two stepping con artists in office now.

The goal was to elicit the comments from the guest about the CNN business model where the bulk of their revenue comes not from CNN but CNN International and as such they don’t need high ratings here in the US where FOX does. That whole interview was designed to shore up CNN and wasn’t really a hard hitting question/answer session. IMO Howie Kurtz would never put his employers on the spot either the Washington Post or CNN without their blessing and approval before he ran it.
