Republicans were forced to "back down" from blocking Wall Street reform, according to a fundraising letter sent by the president.
In the e-mail to his supporters, President Barack Obama wrote that pressure on lawmakers forced Republicans to "back down" from blocking the legislation, which the Senate passed Thursday.
"This movement proved again that the strongest special interests, who for so long have called the shots in Washington, can be beat," he wrote. "When opponents in Congress tried to block the legislation altogether, you stood up -- and they backed down. When the lobbyists pushed for loopholes and exemptions just before a final vote, you did not relent -- and we fought them off."
Heading into the midterm elections, Democrats are looking to capitalize on momentum following the passage of the bill imposing new regulations on the financial services industry.
Several Republicans helped Democrats pass the bill.

You’re right. I’d rather have a liberal whose agenda I can attack with abandon than a RINO I have to pull punches on so he will hopefully vote correctly next time.
There is a fourth Republican - Chuck Grassley. Who blew smoke up his posterior?
What’s better, a RINO or a liberal? I wish I knew. I prefer a clear choice between conservatism and liberalism, but as Darkwolf377 wrote, that choice isn’t always available. I can’t see myself voting for the liberal under any circumstance, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to vote for the RINO.
We can’t count on RINOs, and it’s historically difficult to beat incumbents. Plus, they help give the Democrats “bipartisanship” cover. On the other hand, we know exactly where we stand with liberals. It may be easier for a conservative to beat a hard left liberal than a RINO incumbent.
It's definitely a troublesome choice, but I'd always vote for a RINO over a liberal, because in order to even BE a RINO you're going to contribute to the majority in a congress, which means power to that party. As disgusted as I am with the Republican party (which seems to want to return to its pre-Reagan, Country Club/Rockefeller days), at least a RINO's gonna vote SOMEtimes in the protection of my interests. Whereas a liberal is a liberal.
Brown is just another RINO getting his street cred....Nothing good comes from the New England NOTHING!!!!!
Stephen King and maple syrup.
Even if the voices aren’t real. . .sometimes they have good ideas.
TO ALL YOU MORONS PUSHING “RINOS THAT CAN WIN” — THIS IS WHAT RINOS DO TO US. THEY STAB YOU IN THE DAMN BACK AND HELP DEMS PASS THIS KIND OF GARBAGE!!!!!
100% Totally Correct, pissant. This “RINOs that can win” nonsense just brings us more liberals
What Republicans need are Party leaders who can and will act like Democrats in holding together Party unity

I agree with you. Where are the leaders?
I don’t care if they have never been to college (that might be a plus) I want a strong man. Give me a Patton.
And sometimes they’re full of crap.
> I agree with you. Where are the leaders?
I don’t know. The Bush decision to support Specter and Chafee were disasters. They demonstrated that you can oppose Party policies and still get party support. And I do not see any current leaders, or even up-and-coming leaders who would be willing to enforce Party discipline.
I just don’t trust anyone.
> I just dont trust anyone.
Picking politicians is kind of like picking the least crooked used car salesman. In the end, he is still a used car salesman. We do the best we can, we hope for the best and we pray for guidance.
