Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010) was an American heavy metal vocalist and songwriter. He performed with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band Dio. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser Hear 'n Aid.

He was widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture.

He was collaborating on a project with former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice, under the moniker Heaven & Hell, whose first and only studio album, The Devil You Know, was released on April 28, 2009. He died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010.

Just as the Beatles recorded some songs with string quartet accompaniment -- "Eleanor Rigby", "Yesterday", "She's Leaving Home" -- the Stones took a shot at the same idea. It works quite well.

Old timers like myself remember that a year before the Stones recorded this Mick Jagger tune, Marianne Faithfull recorded it.

I've always ranked "Touch Me" as one of their very best. In addition to Krieger's and Manzarek's exceptional work, they added a brass section, strings and a harpsichord to the mix, and it makes all the difference. It's brilliantly produced.

A few weeks ago, PBS ran a documentary about the Doors that was far better than Oliver Stone's film. I got to understand just why Morrison was such a genius -- and why and how he let his demons destroy him. Damn shame.
