Punk singer John Lydon, better known by his Sex Pistols moniker Johnny Rotten, urged fans at a Public Image Ltd., concert in Brooklyn last night to spit on Sarah Palin and what he called "Tea Party chimpanzees."
The group was playing the finale of their first U.S. tour in almost twenty years at the Music Hall of Williamsburg when Lydon was spat on by a fan reliving the early days of punk when spitting on the band was (briefly) considered a sign of support.
According to Spinner, Lydon became angry when a lunger landed on his cheek. A few songs after threatening the spitter he was going to "lacerate your ****ing face" if he spat on him again, Lydon urged his audience to spit on their enemies.
"You only spit on your enemies, and I have never been your enemy. Save it for Sarah Palin and the Tea Party chimpanzees."
Lydon appeared on the Fox News Channel's Red Eye (video here) in April to promote PiL's tour.
Lydon has fronted two of the most influential, groundbreaking bands in modern music. Sadly his politics are caught in the well-trod ground of hate-filled, violence provoking, mindless liberalism.

I don’t think John’s fans have it together enough physically to spit on anyone (they wasted their one good spit mistakenly on him.)
They could, however, drool on ‘their enemies’, could they but get close enough to make it possible.
I liked the fact that he liked ABBA and wasn’t afraid to say it!

He’s come a long way. He used to rebel against the “fascist regime”. Now he rebels against those rebelling against the “fascist regime”.

I take it that liberty can’t rely on the Rotten vote.
Count me shocked that a punk rocker, even one whose time in the sun is long past, would say something intended to shock.
His comment is tame compared to the sex pistols lyrics.
On tour for the first time in 18 years, a barely half-full house greeted the quartet during the first of two nights at Royale. A chagrined Lydon took notice, of course, peppering his thoughts on the subject with a series of unprintable nouns and adjectives before the band had played even one blistering note of “This Is Not a Love Song.’’
“I apologize to you for the rest of Boston not turning out,’’ said Lydon.
