PARCHMAN, Miss. -- Paul Everette Woodward was put to death Wednesday at the State Penitentiary at Parchman.

Which is why the death sentence used to be meted out for just about everything in Dickens’ Emgland. The state couldn’t afford to keep all those folks in jail. Prison was mostly for politicals whom it was deemed expedient to keep alive or for rich men whose families could pay for their keep.

I heard on the radio on the drive home this afternoon that it costs $40,000-50,000 a year to keep these people on death row. It's ridiculous. We really need an express lane.

I remember the late (and very funny) comedian Robin Harris (of Bebe's Kids fame) giving his take on the death penalty...

Meanwhile in Washington County, East Tennessee, a man in jail since 2002 and alleged to have committed two murders and decapitating the victims heads will go on trial next week and is pleading for a delay.
