Woman recognizes a door-to-door census worker from the state sex-offender registry.

A man with a U.S. census badge knocked on Amy Schmalbach’s door on May 4. Thinking that answering the door to a government worker was a safe bet, she did. And then she wondered why he looked so familiar.

As soon as the man left her Pennsauken home, Schmalbach realized where she had seen him before: on the state’s sex-offender registry.

"I figured this is a government worker, I'm safe," Schmalbach, 33, told the Inquirer. She had given him names and birthdates of her family to the man who called himself “Jamie.”

The man’s real name is Frank J. Kuni, but goes by many aliases, including Jamie Shepard...

And everyone wonders why I won’t answer the door for the census taker (or anyone else I don’t expect).

OK, that’s a bit creepy - Maybe we should all get fingerprint scanners at our doors to cross-check these census people ourselves....something the government apparently doesn’t have the wherewith all to do...

Nah, just don’t answer the door.

I answered the door Monday night....the Census guy was "Thor". I just gave him a dirty look and started closing the door.

I felt pressure on it and looked back out: as God is my witness, he was pushing back on the door to keep me from closing it. I immediately went ballistic, swearing at him enough that he took a step back...then I slammed the door in his face.

What a son of a bitch.

Tote a piece to the door when anyone arrives unexpectedly.

I expect a visit here inasmuch as I answered the race question as HUMAN. I did not answer some of the rest citing it was not their business...2 people live here and that is the enumeration authorized by the constitution.

Why am I not surprised that something like this could happen in the Obama administration.

Doesn’t everyone tote a piece to the door when someone arrives unexpectedly?

Human...nicely done!

Enumeration not demographics!

"I figured this is a government worker, I'm safe," Schmalbach...

Why would someone think that?

You should have called the police then and reported him for attempting to break in, attempted assault, or attempted something criminal....

I don't answer my door unless I am expecting someone. I also learned to keep my doors locked. I had a cop walk into my house because my door was unlocked & I was in the back yard. After getting angry he told me that if my doors are not locked it is an open invitation for the police to walk in.

Good for you!

I live in a bad neighborhood. I refuse to put myself in harm’s way to do my “civic duty.”

There was a time when I was a youngin: People not only left their doors unlocked, but in summer, they left them wide open...and this was when they left the house to go shopping, church and so forth. Anyone who doesn’t lock their door now both when they are home and when they are not is foolish to say the least.

And this is true whether you live in an urban area, suburb or out in the sticks.

With uninvited folks like that at the door, I occasionally have trouble controlling my overprotective Akita. Especially if the door happens to open fully when I step out of the way.
