To ensure there will be enough resources to provide for its own legal residents Williamson County Texas has started requiring any indigent person seeking County paid for medical services to produce a valid Social Security number.
The Countys Commissioners suspected their local government has been taken advantage of by illegals, and the statistics from the first five months of its fiscal year have proved they were right. Their investigation showed just under 23% of the 1153 indigent people it provided medical services to did not have a valid Social Security number; all but assuring they are not in America legally.
Texas law requires counties to set aside and spend up to 8% of their general tax receipts to pay for medical care for the poor. In Williamson Countys case that amounted to $7.1 million this fiscal year which started last October 1.
When Williamson spent $4 million (more than half its set aside for the entire year) in just six months alarm bells sounded. When the County had to grudgingly set aside another $3million at its April 27 meeting the new regulation was passed.
Medicaid wont reimburse
The problem faced by Williamson County and local governments across the country comes down to a Medicaid ruling that it wont reimburse health care providers seeking to get paid for services provided to anyone who does not have a valid Social Security number. This ruling is choking hospitals to death because they are caught between it and the ever raising costs of running a medical facility.
Prior to passing its new regulation...

Also, limitation on provision of expensive free services to illegals--probably more the issue here.
That's the important thing.
</sarcasm>
Dallas County won’t do that. I think half the babies born at Parkland are from illegal parents.

Hey, here’s an idea....how about ALL counties in Texas AND the USofA start doing this? Adios, amigos (to quote the regime).
Absolutely. I live in Williamson County. We're fed up with illegals spilling out of the sanctuary city of Austin and sucking our services dry.
And we are also the party of “know”. Know your constitutional rights.
I think it's higher than 50%.
Would not surprise me.
Just Williamson County protecting their own. (if it wasn’t so congested I would’ve lived there) I used to live in NW Austin because it was one of the few conservative areas in Austin. Illegals are crowded on every corner of “Cesar Chavez Blvd” waiting for a pick up truck and $5 p/h. Austin hospitals are overrun with their kids with no problem getting aid and attention. They spill over to Williamson.
Rino Rick the “good hair” Governor of Texas, will announce the “unfairness” of this action soon.
AFTER he gets some red hot phone calls from his big business money donors, who will fear this becoming a “trend”.
Thank you. I've posted that Austin was a sanctuary city and ever time get blasted by some 0bot whining that it isn't. Egads, have they not been to east Austin? Have they not seen the buses running up and down I35 filled with illegals? On S I35 there's a spot along the highway where the buses pull over and they all pile out and run over to the frontage road to get lunch from one of those taco trailers. Of course, ICE turns a blind eye.
Obviously a bunch of ‘intolerant’’redneck’’racists’ in that there Texas county! How selfish of them to think about LEGAL residents FIRST!!! The noive! /sarc
1) We're told that illegals are the backbone of our labor market and pay taxes just like 48% of legal citizens do. Then why are there so many indigent illegals?
2) What are the fully burdened costs incurred by the illegal indigents? Based on conversations with medical professionals, the big prize is to have their children birthed on American soil so they'll be afforded dual citizenship, which slips their leg into the door of residency versus just having their foot inserted. That's expensive in both the short and long term, since repeat visits for postnatal care is guaranteed.
3) Accommodating patients that don't flow neatly through the system dramatically increases administrative overhead. So, not only do illegals crowd out capacity to provide more quality time for legitimate patients, they also drive up overhead costs in trying to recoup charges and cause cutbacks in doctor - patient time to deliver higher quality care.
This is just the tip of a massive iceberg that drives up costs for all our citizens and creates the crisis which gives a pretext to democRATS to grab control of the system - so they literally hold the keys to life-and-death of our citizens!
The illegals will really head to Austin now.
That’s racist.
Begin contacting your City Councils and County Gov to insist that they do a vetting process on all contractors to ensure that they DO NOT employ illegals.
I’ve don this.
Don’t be surprised by the indignant responses you will get from the tax sucking gov emploees. They WILL act shocked that you could even ask the question.
....’Medicaid ruling that it wont reimburse health care providers seeking to get paid for services provided to anyone who does not have a valid Social Security number.....
So, federal law actually prohibits caring for illegals.
My county sold off our county hospital in 1983. Now we rely on private/public partnerships to handle cost of indigent care.
Works very well.
