In picking conservative underdogs, DeMint affects campaigns nationwide

WASHINGTON -- When voters go to the polls Tuesday for U.S. Senate primary elections in Kentucky and Pennsylvania, they'll write a new act in the ongoing shake-up of the Republican political establishment that's being led by conservative freshman Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

(snip)

DeMint's impact - through endorsements and money from his Senate Conservatives Fund - has also been felt in recent weeks in Florida, Indiana and Utah, and it will reverberate throughout the summer in California, Colorado and beyond.

Around the country, DeMint is backing conservative underdog challengers who are running against more moderate Republican establishment candidates such as Carly Fiorina in California and Jane Norton in Colorado.

(snip)

"I'm going to help do everything I can this election to prove that a good common-sense conservative can be elected in any state in the country," he told his California audience last month. "And I believe it's going to happen."

As they've watched DeMint's growing national profile among hard-line conservative activists, some analysts think his ultimate target is a more powerful post than Senate Republican leader.

"He is cultivating a movement," said Ross Baker, a political scientist at Rutgers University. "I think he sees himself as a presidential candidate. With the intensity of people on his side, he can nudge aside people like (Mitt) Romney and Tim Pawlenty."

DeMint should challenge McConnell for majority leader.

Funny how DeMint picks different people than Mitt Romney. Obviously, DeMint isn’t a real conservative like Mitt is. /sarc

Knowing that Grayson gave a speech at a van jones event, I wasn’t at all surprised that Demint endorsed paul.

KY-Sen. 2010: Trey Grayson gave keynote speech at Van Jones-sponsored climate change event

Just in case.... so people know what I'm referring to.

I’ll just make that my tagline to be clear my feelings on the issue. He is by far the best and most principled candidate we have. I love Sarah too. But DeMint has lower negatives and sticks to his principles as or more often.

From your lips to God's ear, Mr. Baker.

Well, when Sarah gives money to Lindsey Graham, Orrin Hatch, and Carly Fiorina, I think it’s pretty safe to say that Jim is more principled.

I like DeMint, he is a good man! You say he sticks to his principals more than Sarah, whom you love. Thems fighting words.

I will put Sarah up against anybody. Like I said, I believe Jim DeMint is a good man. Could we have some type of PRINCIPAL contest, say going back the last 20 years for each of them.

I do not know enough about DeMint going back 20 years to know how he would measure up should such a contest be undertaken between the 2.

My money is on Sarah.

As for the article, if my memory serves me right, Sarah Palin endorsed many Conservative underdogs. I suspect quite a few that DeMint either endorsed late, or did not at all.

I wonder if it`s possible that the MSM writer of this story had other motives???

To be fair, I said as principled or moreso, that is at least equal to. Certainly not less. They are both great conservatives and I didn’t mean It as a slight to Sarah. You have the top 2 right there of the big names.
