You don't speak of being in combat accidentally. You either were in country or you weren't. I spent 19 months in Viet Nam. I remember it distinctly. I speak of it from first-hand knowledge. There is no discussion about it that is unintentional.

I was in Viet Nam. I flew in on a 707 civilian aircraft from the Phillipines. We sat on the tarmac in Saigon for about 20 minutes then went on to Bangkok where I partied for 4 days then on to Diego Garcia. I NEVER tell anyone I “served” in Viet Nam.

I served during the gulf war as an Air Force Pilot........I never went to theater my room mates did and I would never claim to have done , what they have done.

Ditto here. I served DURING both Iraq wars and DURING the war in Afghanistan, but never would I cheapen warfighters' contributions by claiming I was actually there.

Interestingly misspoke is not in the LEGAL Disctionary/thesaurus(misspoke is not available in the legal dictionary. Try:general English dictionary and thesaurus)

Having served in Southeast Asia a couple of times, it is unconscionable that someone would have stated he served there when, in fact, he did not! Perhaps I'm being a little idealistic, but I admire candidates who speak the truth and possesses integrity. One does not casually “misspeak,” these things, considering the thousands of miles and double digit number of time zones that separate Connecticut from Vietnam. It is shameful to express these lies, and it is appalling for any Veteran to listen to these lies!
