Japan becomes 'kiddie porn superpower?'

Visual depictions of children engaged in sexual activity - child pornography or "kiddie porn" -- is considered abhorrent in most world cultures. That didn't stop the ruling Democratic Party of Japan from refusing to support legislation that would outlaw the possession of child pornography. The party has denied the legislation on the grounds that it would infringe individuals' freedom of expression.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - To counter this, Japanese authorities say there has been a stepped-up police campaign against people that sell sexual images of children.

definately a different culture from ours (US). Personally I give a rats what they do - they are certainly on a downward spiral but in this respect they have been sexual pervs for centuries so what is normal in Japan are we headed for the same with libs in control?

Defeat in World War II broke the Bushido culture in Japan. Garbage like this makes me wonder if that was entirely good for Japan.

They had a show about the weird sexual culture of Japan on one of the science channels a while back. Japan is very strange in the regard that they have never had either a religious or a cultural taboo about pedophilia. Child molestation is frowned upon, but nowhere to the degree of the West, and child voyeurism is considered fine. Oddly enough, for many years child pornography was legal, but adult pornography was banned. Even though Japan recently banned the production of child pornography to appease the West, it's still “winked” at by the authorities. However, child pornography has largely moved to the cartoon or “anime” sector, where anything goes. Comic books and anime videos depicting child pornography can be readily purchased on just about any street corner. Strange thing is, there is really no public demand for stricter laws and as this story points out, lawmakers will quite freely defend child pornography against what they consider a western attack on their culture.

While manufacture, sale and proof of purchase should be outlawed, I don't believe that simple possession should be illegal.

It leaves the door open to abuse and allows anyone to be legally ruined by nearly anyone with little true evidence. Just a few examples: a jealous lover logging on your PC and setting you up, a hacker breaking into your network or even a corrupt law enforcement/government official setting you up for any reason.

The same is true of our insane drug possession laws. For example, anyone that doesn't like you can plant a coin-sized package of nearly worthless over-cut drugs and next time you get pulled over, you will be charged with a mandatory 5-10 year minimum in many states. The only proof required is the package and you will be behind bars unless YOU can prove it's someone else’s. Good luck

Don't think it happens? A good friend of mine was set-up and sentenced to 5 years after an ex-lover set him up. I confronted her and she laughed how easy it was. He was highly respected in the community but zero-tolerance possession laws mandated 5 years. She said I'd be next if I ever spoke to her again and I regret not recording the conversation. He took his own life and said he would never be a free man because there was nothing to stop her from repeating it.

“Magic Illegal Object” laws are a miscarriage of justice and allow law enforcement to be lazy.

I’ve often thought about that myself. A hacker plants kiddie porn on your computer, or someone plants drugs on your property, and calls the cops. Here comes your very own personal no-knock raid.

Thank you. I’m not a fan of kiddie porn, or the exploitation of children, young girls, or even young women. It even bothered me that 18 to 24 year old women had to participate in a black and white pantie and tops photo shoot as a part of the Miss America process.

I think you know where I’m coming from here. Issues that should have been acknowledged, remedied, and completely cleaned up years ago are still bouncing around inside an organization that I have tried very hard not to smear.

And then this entity decided to publish something on the subject, and it angered me. The moral high ground has been abandoned on this topic, and it makes me (frankly) furious to see an entity associated with the name in any manner, try to address this type of problem as if to impart good conscience to the general public.

To my C friends, I’m sorry if that tweaks you, but from someone not a C who has tried to keep an even keel on certain matters, this just set me off.

So a couple of percentages points of priests (and their protecting bishops) were sexual abusers and you think it smears the whole religion and it’s connected groups? And, most of the abused were preteen males - so let’s call the bulk of the abuse homosexual predation.

Small percentages is what we should have been talking about from the beginning isn’t it.

Sorry, too many transfers, to many missed opportunities for condemnation from the top, to many missed opportunities to kick people from positions of trust in a timely manner, and too many avoidances of the wages of sin, for that old canard to work.

So what should have been small percentages, turned into something entirely different didn’t it.

As for the attempt to link my comments to Judas type activity, that sorry disgusting attempt pails in the light of who betrayed whom here.

I’m not trying to minimize it, if that’s what you think. But you are painting everything and everyone with a broad brush unfairly. To say that the Church has no place to speak due to what a small portion has done is what’s pathetic.

As far as the Judas comment, I meant that we don’t stop doing what is right even when we are surrounded with sin. The fact that we have some evil sinners and evil enablers doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue to preach what is right, and point out what is wrong. The fact that it bothers you that we Catholics continue to do so is just puzzling. I have no idea if this addresses your comment back to me since I didn’t really understand your point.

I feel sorry that you feel this way about the Church, really. Be angry at the sinners (as we Catholics are), but to express what you did.....

To bring it personal.... I’m definitely a Prodigal Daughter. My decades of ignoring God and sinning has no relevance on the fact that I now advocate living a Christian life.
