In the past, I've remarked to friends that the difference between a Jewish liberal and a Jewish conservative is that when a Jewish liberal walks out of the Holocaust Museum, he feels, "This shows why we need to have more tolerance and multiculturalism." The Jewish conservative feels, "We should have killed a lot more Nazis, and sooner." I thought of this as I read Peter Beinart's new essay, "The Failure of the American Jewish Establishment," which argues that "liberal Zionism" is in danger unless groups such as AIPAC start to take a more critical view of Israel's actions.

If you put a headline like that on a story, there’s no way anyone is going to read it with a clear head. Possibly the logic is so specious that you need an incendiary bunch of shit like that to get people to click, but I sure as hell am not going to.

There were a few bands of rebel Jews in Poland, but yes, too many Jews were/are pacifists. Still, their options were limited. The French Resistance was smaller than we think and its members could hide in the local population among synthesizers. . But the point is well-taken: the liberal thinks that the messianic age is close, the conservative Jew--or Christian-- knows that he is still in the Wilderness.

The philosophy of Liberal Jews was not insignificant in the first one. Marxism was useful as a bogey-man for the NAZIs, although in substance they differed by far less than is portrayed.

You’re right, they had few (or no) options and I just do not understand the mindset of the modern “Liberal” Jew. I understand that the position of the Left is to hate Israel and support her enemies, but all Jews have to know Israel isn’t the aggressor. That means Liberal Jews care more about the ideology of the Left than their own people. Weird. Inexplicable.

The descendants of the ersatz Jews who prayed at the altar of FDR actaully look at the Holocaust and see an excuse to participate in grievance politics and join other minorities. Screw them. While they were replacing their faith with socialism, my family died at the hands of the nazis and communists.

The fact is that in 1930's Germany, Jews felt very safe. They were highly assimilated, prosperous, and thought of themselves proudly as German citizens, assuming that that status would be respected by any regime. They minimized Hitler as a loudmouth hothead with a minority of support, and did not take his stated anti-jewish sentiment seriously.

Today's liberal US jew is highly assimilated, prosperous, and perceives no threat from the domestic regime. They do not identify with Israel and so are blind to the clear storm warnings gathering over the precarious state of Israeli security. They believe their status as American citizens will insulate them from the stated pro-moslem sentiments of the current regime. They minimize Obama as a perhaps naive but generally benign progressive, with whose agenda they basically agree.

Yeah, I'd say the liberal US jew is on a dangerous course.
