Vaccinia immunization, as given to prevent the spread of smallpox, produces a five-fold reduction in HIV replication in the laboratory. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Immunology suggest that the end of smallpox vaccination in the mid-20th century may have caused a loss of protection that contributed to the rapid contemporary spread of HIV.
Raymond Weinstein, a family doctor turned laboratory scientist at George Mason University, Manassas, Virginia, USA, worked with a team of researchers from George Washington University and UCLA. The researchers looked at the ability of white blood cells taken from people recently immunised with vaccinia to support HIV replication compared to unvaccinated controls. They found significantly lower viral replication in blood cells from vaccinated individuals. Weinstein said, "There have been several proposed explanations for the rapid spread of HIV in Africa, including wars, the reuse of unsterilized needles and the contamination of early batches of polio vaccine. However, all of these have been either disproved or do not sufficiently explain the behavior of the HIV pandemic. Our finding that prior immunization with vaccinia virus may provide an individual with some degree of protection to subsequent HIV infection suggests that the withdrawal of such vaccination may be a partial explanation".
Smallpox immunization was gradually withdrawn from the 1950s to the 1970s following the worldwide eradication of the disease, and HIV has been spreading exponentially since approximately the same time period. Weinstein and his colleagues propose that vaccination may confer protection against HIV by producing long term alterations in the immune system, possibly including the expression of a certain receptor, CCR5, on the surface of a person's white blood cells which is exploited by both viruses. Speaking about the results, Weinstein said, "While these results are very interesting and hopefully may lead to a new weapon against the HIV pandemic, they are very preliminary and it is far too soon to recommend the general use of vaccinia immunization for fighting HIV".
Fascinating finding...might explain a few things.
How about fag behavior....
No - it could not possibly be homosexual behavior. It has to be the smallpox vaccination. There’s probably another link between rising HIV cases and the shrinking supply of black and white televisions. I think I’ll apply for a grant to study that.
That is interesting and has implications regarding Autism as well.
Long time no bump into on a thread Pharmboy. Hope you and your family are doing well.
No one is saying that the usual suspects are not to blame...however, there has always been a bit of mystery as to why the spreaqd has been different in Africa than in the west. That’s all...and this phenomenon might explain a bit of that.
Indeed we are...nice to hear from you. Love our new governor, eh? And all the best to you...
This is BS! Anything to relinquish responsible behavior from fags.
But, the earliest victims of HIV in the US certainly would have been vaccinated individuals. HIV started here (or we first learned of it) around 1985, and there were many cases before that. If you assume that the earliest victims were at least 20-25, they would have been born before 1960 and would have been vaccinated. Most victims were much older than that, of course. So, I don’t see how this hypothesis stands up to scrutiny.
Exactly.
Men having sex with men by the hundreds is what spread GRID (Gay Related Immunodeficiency Disease) explosively.
fascinating!
so maybe it wasn’t a plot by white people to exterminate the black man...
And let’s not forget that it’s likely that ALL of the homosexuals who got sick and died in the late 70s and early 80s would have had the smallpox vaccine.
Should those individuals who are carrier states,
or are at elevated risk to becoming so,
consider getting the Vaccinia immunization?
Should a campaign to re-institute
widespread vaccination be in order?
The Vaccinia immunization is not an entirely innocuous vaccine.
There are significant and severe reactions to it
in some individuals
Second, what these people are offering, is an explanantion as to why the disease erupted at this particular time. It had been around a while, but exploded in the '70s and '80s. This hypothesis is one to consider...that's all. It may very well be incorrect...that's how the science works. I'm sure it will be tested.
I don’t think it’s an either-or conclusion. The smallpox vaccination could confer protection on people against a range of viruses, one of which is HIV. But that has nothing to do with how HIV is spread. It just would determine the number of people, otherwise exposed to HIV, who actually become infected and then actually die from HIV.
Hippies from the '60's movement. It takes a while to show up.
I bet a lot of them ate carrots and/or broccoli as well.
I understand what you are saying. It should be easy to look at people under 30 years old today to see if they are dieing of AIDS at the same rate.
My conspiracy-self sees a company coming out with an AIDS vaccine with would be useless but they will point to the fact that AIDS isn’t killing as much now. The reduction in deaths would actually be because the new cases are smallpox vaccine free but the company would claim it was their vaccine, and the vaccine would be used widely and cause a huge amount of complications with side effects.
The Vaccinia inoculation ceased to be administered in the USA ~ 1971
One estimate I saw in the past was that
it gave an immunity against SmallPox for ~10 years
My Memory may be faulty about this,
but I was one of the Vaccinia Volunteers in 2002
