The growing list of infringements on American Society (Vanity)
Self-authored | 5/16/10 | Little Pig

The current administration has now been in power for one year and four months, give or take. To date, it has together with Congress conducted a gradual but escalating campaign to subvert or transform numerous elements of American society. This has included major components of the American financial sector, American manufacturing, the American health care sector, telecommunications, and parts of the American legal system. In addition, the administration has significantly changed the foreign relations posture of our nation, including several well-known incidents where allies were treated poorly or even all but disregarded, and nations with known malicious intentions towards America have been approached obsequiously, even subserviently. The administration has also made changes to the fundamental structure and workings of the executive branch. Further, several major figures in the administration have also demonstrated a significant lack of judgement, even incompetence, in discharging their duties and exercising their offices.

Below, I have tried to catalog the major areas of transformation, along with details of each change. As this list is necessarily incomplete, since I am only one person and have lost track of the amount of ongoing change, forgotten details, or due to lack of expertise been unable to correctly understand certain areas, I ask each of you to contribute as you can to the list, whether in adding details to my list or supplying new pieces, so that a catalog of the manipulation of our nation can be enumerated. Please refrain from listing things that are not backed up by policy, proposed or existing legislation, or other documented actions by the government; this catalog is meant as the foundation from which analysis can proceed, not a place for speculation or unsubstantiated claims or rumors.

The financial sector: The administration, continuing and significantly expanding on the actions of the previous administration, supplied a major financial bailout to a number of large banking and investment firms which were in straits due to the subprime mortgage crisis. This included gaining control over several large banking and investment firms, or otherwise exerting control over them to include dictating executive compensation. The administration has used this newfound leverage to control spending by these institutions, including gaining some measure of control over the mortgage market (more detail in this area is requested). Legislation has been suggested that would put the government in direct control over private citizens' personal retirement investments.

Labor economy: The administration, together with congress, passed a massive "stimulus" package, intended to revive the stagnant economy, claiming that it would halt the rise in unemployment at approximately 8 percent, and that to not pass it would result in much higher unemployment rates.

Healthcare: The administration, and congress, together passed a major piece of healthcare legislation that would ultimately provide government-administered healthcare to a large percentage of citizens. This legislation bears a staggering price tag, and although touted as being cost-saving, or at the least budget-neutral, has been revealed as actually costing billions of dollars. The revenue-generating portions of the bill go into effect almost immediately. Apart from a few areas of coverage, the vast majority of the benefits of the plan do not take effect for several years. Further, the plan is structured in such a way that over time, more and more citizens are compelled to participate, through job changes or attrition from private health plans that go under. Failure to maintain approved levels of health insurance is punishable with a fine, and refusal to pay the fine is punishable with prison time.

Manufacturing: The administration, again with congress, authorized the bailout and subsequent government takeover of one of the largest corporations on earth, GM, and the turning over to Union organizations of another major automobile manufacturer, Chrysler. As organized labor has been a major benefactor of the current administration and many members of congress, this is a de facto nationalization as well.

Telecommunications: The administration has stated that they feel it necessary to be able to monitor all communications by all citizens everywhere. This is in contrast to the previous administration's similar actions, which were focused exclusively on those persons who were either in contact with known or suspected terrorist organizations outside the US, or were themselves known or suspected terrorists. The administration has also begun cataloging the entire contents of Twitter in the Library of Congress.

Legal system: The administration has allowed several persons alleged to have conducted terrorist operations inside the United States to have civilian legal counsel and be treated as ordinary criminals. The administration has also appointed or nominated two persons to the supreme court who believe in using subjective elements other than the written law, such as ethnic considerations or "social justice" to make legal decisions, and has further stated that they believe that justices have a duty to decide cases based on such considerations, rather than making their decisions according to the law.

Executive malfeasance: This area is already largely cataloged in the ongoing list of gaffes and other blunders made by the administration, but I will try to enumerate some of the ones that have direct impact on the functioning of our government and relations with other nations here. The President has appointed an unprecedented number of "czars", persons unaccountable to congress and with significant powers, to the executive branch, constituting a shadow government of sorts. Several of these czars have been revealed to have radical opinions on matters of policy, economics, and citizens' rights, as well as holding beliefs that seem to belie the ability to make sound judgments. In addition, several executive appointees have been revealed to have major legal failings, largely related to unpaid taxes. One such person is the Secretary of the Treasury, who is in fact in charge of America's tax system. The President has met with a number of foreign leaders, and has shown either considerable incompetence, ignorance, or dangerous non-American sympathies by bowing before these leaders, some of whom head countries with significantly anti-American interests. The administration has voiced, on several occasions, opinions that run counter to the American way of life, including statements such as "at some point, you've made enough money". The administration has also shown a dangerous lack of competence in such actions as the report issues last year citing veterans, people who are against abortion, and people who believe strongly in the government following the constitution, as persons who pose a potential danger to society. Further, the administration has proposed legislation, known as "Cap and Trade", which purports to address the issue of "Climate change", formerly referred to as "Global Warming". This issue has in recent months been shown to be largely based on falsified, fictitious, or misinterpreted data.

Recently, congress has begun looking at the immigration situation. Precipitated by a law passed recently in Arizona, which mirrors the current federal law, the federal government has begun exploring a way to "find a path to citizenship" for immigrants, which is a euphemism for a blanket amnesty, largely aimed at illegal immigrants from Mexico. This will, as in the past, have the effect of diluting the workforce at a time when jobs are already more difficult to find, while also allowing each of those naturalized citizens to "chain-immigrate" the rest of their families, encouraging a flood of additional immigrants who will try to get here before the amnesty cutoff, and also encouraging further illegal immigration in the future on the supposition that there may be more amnesties in the future.

I've tried to touch on the major areas, and to put down what details I can remember for each of them. I know I am missing a lot, and that there are certainly other things I can't bring to mind at the moment. I hope you will help me to expand this list, by adding or correcting details I have put down, or by adding other things this administration has done to change our way of life. Again, I am looking for provable things: Policy or legislation already passed, actual bills either proposed or under debate, documented actions already taken or scheduled to be taken. Please do not include rumors, guesses, analysis, or extrapolation at this point. I don't want anything here that will dilute this list. Thank you, and I hope this list is helpful. I will do my best to answer questions about things I listed that someone may not be aware of or unclear on.

I neglected to add in the Executive branch taking control of the census, and AG Holder doing extraordinary contortions to avoid the term “radical Islam” under questioning over recent terrorist incidents.

Nachum, would you be kind enough to ping your list for this article? One of the other posters suggested it.

Another issue being debated currently is the imposition of a VAT tax on the US economy. This is not necessarily bad, as long as it takes the place of the current tax system, but there is no talk of repealing the income and business taxes, so this would be a huge new drain on the productivity of the economy.

I think the other posters were refering to a catalogue of Obama's malfeasance that is being kept since he walked into office. There are are numerous people doing similar things on the web. Mine is simply referred to as "the list".

This is a link to the site:

Let me know what you think. If you would like other resources, let me know. :)
