Allen Weh and Susana Martinez have surged far ahead of three other candidates in the race for the Republican nomination for governor with the June 1 primary election just around the corner, a Journal Poll found.
Weh, a retired Marine Corps Reserve colonel and former state party chairman, and Martinez, a state district attorney from Las Cruces, were in a virtual tie as the survey of likely Republican voters wrapped up late last week.
Trailing the leaders in the May 11-13 Journal Poll were Republican candidates Pete Domenici Jr., Doug Turner and Janice Arnold-Jones.
"It appears that two of the five candidates are breaking away from the others and are emerging as front-runners in the final three weeks before the election," said Journal pollster Brian Sanderoff, president of Research and Polling Inc. in Albuquerque.
Lt. Gov. Diane Denish is the only ballot candidate for the Democratic governor nomination in the June 1 election. Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson is ineligible to run again after two terms.
Weh and Martinez were supported by 31 percent and 30 percent of the Republican voters surveyed.

Sarah Palin was in ABQ this morning and gave her support to Susana. IMO Susana has the best chance to win the election in a state where Hispanics and Native Americans are a majority and Anglos a minority. Her positions are conservative and her candidacy is attractive to those who look beyond the primary where the winner will face Richardson's Lt.Gov who is also a woman.
Susana Martinez On the Issues:
- Smaller government that is open and transparent
- Root out corruption in Santa Fe
- Securing the border a top priority
- Prosecute those who violate our laws (As DA, Prosecutes over 600 cases related to border security every year in her county)
- Repeal the law that allows illegal immigrants to obtain drivers licenses.
- Opposes providing illegal immigrants with free tuition
- Tougher laws to protect children, the disabled and seniors
- Strengthen DWI laws
- Reinstate the death penalty
- Opposes raising taxes
- Supports cutting spending
- Eliminate programs that dont work
- Supports balanced budget
- Create new jobs in NM by lowering corporate taxes
- Cut red tape (excessive regulations)
- A rated by NRA
- Pro-Life - recommended by New Mexico Right to Life
- Big govt not the solution to health care problems
- Individuals need to take responsibility for their own health care.
- Will work to pass tort reform legislation
- Stop throwing money at broken school system reform it
- Empower parents, raise academic standards, increase school choice and reward best teachers
- Ensure tax dollars go into the classroom, not to a massive education bureaucracy

I just hope Richardson gets whooped! When I worked at a radio station in NM, I had the pleasure of interviewing him. He was rude, pompous, and obviously thinks he’s God’s gift.
And in case you didn’t know it, he’s even more...beautiful... in person. :D

Richardson is term limited and can not run. His term ends December 31 of this year.

Richardson isn’t running. His minion Denish is. By the way, I just saw a commercial from her. Nice work of fiction. Her argument seems to come down to, she turned a blind eye to everything the rats do in Santa Fe. Whoever wins (Martinez, knock on wood) better go after her hard and heavy.

Well, in Denish’s own words she was kept out of the loop on many things including when Richardson left the state (wasn’t told where he goes and when he’ll return). But that’s no reason to elect her.

From leapfrog0202 on another thread:
Weh did nothing for the R party when he was in charge of it, but lead a bunch of infighting and allow that Pearce and Wilson mess. As far as he goes, I feel like why should he get another chance even if its for a different job? Polling also shows Weh NOT beating Denish & the big thing is not allowing her to be elected.

I think they just need to shut down the railroad and let it sit. Surely no other state will want to purchase it. I think we’re stuck with it.

How is the Sarah endorsement going to play. Will it give Martinez a boost in the race or will have a negative impact.

In a state with a majority Democratic registration and minority Anglo population, a conservative Hispanic woman has a better chance against a liberal Anglo woman than a gruff-speaking retired military colonel rich businessman. To me its about winning the state back for Republicans, especially with reapportionment coming up as a result of the 2010 census. And with her credentials (winning races in heavily Democratic Dona Ana county), Martinez should give Democrat Denish quite a good race, especially in heavily Hispanic northern NM.

From what I can tell a RINO wouldn’t endorse Martinez. If you get my drift.

The RR currently recovers about 9% of O&M costs in fares. Richardson and the legislature have been shifting funds to keep it going as the tax increases passed in 2008 have not kept up with the costs due to the recession. Look for further cuts in service with increased fares come a new administration. I doubt if it will be shut down completely, at least not now. But if the recession continues, it will have to compete with education funds among other demands. And you know who will win that battle.

Don’t know; didn’t know about it until this p.m. KRQE says there were 450 there which is good for a 9 a.m. Sunday rally.
