Betten's beat is crime prevention. Antonia showed him pictures of the Clay County home invasion scene.
"I can tell you right away what failed. You can see the dead-bolt assembly is still intact, and what failed was the door frame," Betten said.
Betten pushed for an ordinance requiring good locks and reinforced door frames, hinges and doors on Overland Park homes.
"It's a good general rule of thumb that if we can keep them out for at least 30 seconds, frustrate them long enough that generally by that time, they'll abandon the attack," Betten said.
If an intruder gets in, call 911, Betten said.
"Get out of the house and get into an area where you can yell, scream and draw attention to yourself," Betten said.
Betten cautions using a weapon as protection because it is crucial to keep intruders out to begin with. Betten has collected home-security information from what kind of hardware makes doorways stronger to windows, alarms and lighting.

You shoot someone that is coming through your door with a .410 and it will make him/her sick . Permanently.
The door gets kicked in, the homeowner starts dialing. 911 dispatchers are drinking coffee.
The crook starts searching the home. The phone is ringing at the police dept.
The crook spots the homeowner. 911 picks up.
The homeowner says "HEL-" and the crook knocks the phone from their hand. The 911 dispatcher gets a puzzled look on her face.
The crook begins to beat the homeowner to death. This takes 2 or 3 minutes.
The folks at the police station sit and discuss the phone call. Wrong number? Prank? Minor problem? Should they send someone? This takes about 2 or 3 minutes.
The crook takes a wallet and walks out the door. The cop takes his hat and walks out the door.

How am I supposed to call 911 when I’m busy correcting my shooting stance and acquiring a proper sight picture?

Bingo! That is precisely what happens, as anyone who has listened to a 911 call can attest. A million questions are asked, with no real sense of urgency.
A realistic video (splitscreen is an excellent idea BTW) would do wonders to show people how ineffective 911 really is.
A warned shot thru the door ought to be quite sufficent.
First shot to be aimed high. If they persist, then fire away.
Actually, I think calling 911 is a great idea.
After one accurately fires two to the body and one to the head, .40 cal or better.
