Haim Saban Plans 'Serious Look' at Newsweek

Billionaire media investor Haim Saban said Wednesday he's planning to "take a serious look" at Newsweek magazine, which is on the auction block.

Mr. Saban said Don Graham, chairman of Newsweek parent company Washington Post Co., rebuffed him two years ago when he inquired about buying Newsweek. Last week, however, the company announced it was putting Newsweek up for sale after deciding it couldn't make the magazine profitable.

"I would be remiss if I didn't look at it now, but the world has significantly changed in the last two years, and not for the better," Mr. Saban said in an interview.

Rush called it yesterday. Rush said that he wouldn’t be surprised if some billionaire didn’t buy this for an ego thing and to express his views, even if it lost money as a txa write-off.

The guy’s an idiot if he thinks Newsweak is a viable business.

But hey, if he’s in a spending mood, do you have his email or cell #? I have some obsolete overpriced crap that I’d love to unload to some naive billionaire.

Bits about Haim Saban:

Saban relates that his political opinions regarding Israel and its foreign relations have shifted significant to the right:

“I used to be a real leftist. I remember Arik Sharon [the leader of Israel’s right-wing Likud Party] coming here, to my house, a few months before Camp David, when he was still leader of the opposition. He told me there would be no deal because [Yassir] Arafat would not sign. I told myself that there was nothing to be done — these right-wingers were simply insane. I had no doubt that there would be a deal and the problems would be resolved. History proved that Sharon was right and I was wrong. In matters relating to security, that moved me to the right. Very far to the right.”

How far right?

“When there is a terrorist attack, I am [Avigdor] Lieberman. Sometimes to the right of Lieberman. For two days I really love Lieberman. But afterward I come back to reality. Look, I don’t see a solution today.”

You meet frequently and quite intimately with Israeli and American decision-makers. What do you tell than about the situation regarding Iran?

“The Iranians are serious. They mean business. [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad is not a madman. [....] When I see Ahmadinejad, I see Hitler. They speak the same language. His motivation is also clear: the return of the Mahdi is a supreme goal. And for a religious person of deep self-persuasion, that supreme goal is worth the liquidation of five and a half million Jews. We cannot allow ourselves that. Nuclear weapons in the hands of a religious leadership that is convinced that the annihilation of Israel will bring about the emergence of a new Muslim caliphate? Israel cannot allow that. This is no game. It’s truly an existential danger.”

Well, maybe Newsweak is hoping to get its respectability on par with that of the Power Rangers.

It sounds as if he’s a leftist who is beginning to see a little light on Israel.

Saban is an Egyptian Jewish refugee who supports the right in terms of sovereignty in Israel, but is a Lib on almost everything else. A shame, as most of the Mizrahmim tend to be on the political right in all areas.

I’ve taken a serious look at Newsweek, too. That’s why I don’t read it anymore.
