Michelle Obama’s obesity report: Tax pop and candy, subsidize fruits and veggies

Michelle Obama’s 124 page Childhood Obesity Report is complete for the ‘Let’s Move! campaign’ and it is now online for review.

Most families will not disagree with the ‘findings’ of the report but the extent that common-sense recommendations are detailed in ‘government-speak’ is laughable.

A simple piece of advise such as “Turn off the TV and go out and play” turns into this:

“An association between television viewing and risk of being overweight in preschool children, independent of socio-demographic factors. Specifically, for each additional hour of television viewing, the odds ratio of children having a BMI greater than the 85th percentile was 1.06.1 and . . . physical activity assists children in obtaining and improving fine and gross motor skill development, coordination, balance and control, hand-eye coordination, strength, dexterity, and flexibility—all of which are necessary for children to reach developmental milestones.”

The report largely suggests government take a stronger role in warning parents, mandating changes in schools, and regulate companies that produce junk food and soft drinks.

It’s largely a liberal response to any problem but what’s more interesting is the encouragement of sin taxes on junk food, soft drinks, and candy and propose subsidizing fruits and vegetables.

"...We ought to have a caboose tax..."

It'd be a pretty hefty tax at 1600...

Yknow I’m just finising up Laura Bush’s new book & my head is spinning—I had no idea the First Lady was so active in so many worthy humanitarian causes world wide.

That along with the incredible number of hours she and her husband spent visiting & consoling 9/11 victims, families of service members & wounded soldiers.

I need a nap just to try to absorb it all. Many of her stories brought tears to my eyes.

I knew she was a beautiful & well respected ambassador for our country but I had no clue just how engaged she was & how effectively she used her platform for so many good causes.

Now we’ve got Michelle Obama.

How far & fast we have fallen.

That’s the classy part. She wasn’t in it for the image.

The obvious move (which I would support) would be to make the food stamp program more restrictive: Limit food stamp purchases to produce, fresh meats, dairy, and canned fruits and vegetables. This would end the grocery-cart-full-of-Doritos-and-ice-cream-paid-for-with-EBT-cards that you see in every grocery store in America.

But no, they would rather tax the middle class.

More academic drivel. They are incapable of making a simple statement so they hide behind jargon and numbers to support their preconceived biases.

And there is much to be said for millions of dollars spent on studies that do nothing but state the obvious...

figures, now that SHE is rich she wants to tax candy and sodas!

I think someone needs to tell her to pull the twinky out of her own enormous ass before trying to take someones coca cola!

I think everyone who receives any kind of welfare should have the magnetic strip on their drivers license activated to show they are not eligible to purchase candy, cokes, beer, cigarettes, sugar, salt, sugary food of any kind, fast food, pizza, and a 1000 other things.

Tellers should be required to run each and every persons license on each and every transaction to ensure that the welfare peeps are not allowed to purchase frivolous items.

I agree that the obvious solution is to limit food stamp purchases to healthier foods. Pay for your sodas, cookies, candy, chips, juice drinks, and sugar-coated cereals with your own money, not mine.

Ironically, a junk food tax is going to be more of a poor tax than a middle class tax, in my opinion. Middle class folks are less likely to be wasting much money on junk foods.

You’re exactly right. Her book is amazing, I recommend it. She doesn’t get into politics & personality, it’s the 8 years of her own experiences.

I’m floored.

How about this, Michelle: CUT taxes, mind your own d*mn business, and take a moment or two to actually READ the United States Constitution.

Then show me the place where it says that the wife of a president is empowered to prescribe Americans’ diet for them.

If the GOP had some balls they would say this and ask the president to do this in order to support his wife’s agenda.

I’ve seen people go into a store with their food stamps, now it;s like a credit card and they buy just junk food, they’re always overweight so obviously they’re not starving/
They’re giving their kids all junk food, chips, etc.

They should be made to buy just fresh veggies and fruit and imagine the rats , MO, and obama’s support go really down overnight
