For the last month, Arizona Sen. John McCain has been running his primary campaign against former Rep. J.D. Hayworth as if it was the final weekend of the 2008 presidential campaign.
On a daily basis, McCain's team bashes Hayworth while simultaneously working to shore up the Senator's right flank through a series of symbolic acts ranging from the rejection of the "maverick" title he wore proudly during both of his presidential campaigns to his forceful support of Arizona's controversial new immigration law.
(McCain released an ad recently in which he urges the federal government to "complete the danged fence", a message that seems to be a departure in emphasis -- if not substance -- from his past position.)
Republican observers are divided about the message being sent by McCain's aggressiveness: is he acting out of an abundance of caution or is he panicked by the possibility he will come up short against Hayworth on Aug. 24?

Please God in Heaven, help your suffering nation America. Keep people like John McCain from further vexing us with another term in office.
McCain = John Kerry’s first choice as running mate, over Edwards.
Not sure what any other information people need.
I read where Arizona is a closed primary state.
Dang! John’s campaigning a whole lot harder against JD than he ever did against Obama! Where was this guy two years ago???
I am temporarily in Arizona (for work)
Juan NcLame is running radio ads as if this was the last week of the election- he is calling himelf “Arizona’s last line of defence”
As if he had not already HAD 24 YEARS TO ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING
He sounds pathetic and stupid-and I think he is going down
The buzz I hear is that he had 4 tries (totalling 24 years) and thats enough
Ouch. Why is McCain panicking again?
That is a damn good point!....Why was this doofus missing in action against Obama?
Time for supporters to step and send a check to JD (or use your favorite debit/credit card).
Perhaps Juan Kerry would jump at the chance.
This year we will start finding out who are the real conservatives and who are the "Blue Bloods."
The ones who get booted out of the Primaries and then run as Independents are the weasels you mentioned.
These politicians were always in it for themselves and not for our Country and our Constitution.
Anyone can be a republican, but not every Republican is a Conservative. We Conservatives MUST take the Republican Party so we can save our Country!
The left decries the start of this process yet they said nary a peep when the far left took over the Democratic Party. Just ignore them and WE WILL WIN our Country back!
Because he only fights conservatives and bows to liberalism. It’s a family thing.
What am I missing? It looks like McCain has a 12 pt lead according to that chart.
He's going to need money to do it. McCain is spending millions on ads and he's going to try to convince the people who haven't paid attention all these years that he's always been against illegal immigration.
We have an open primary. We tried to get it closed but some of the heavyweights for McCain made it not effective until the NEXT primary.
Why is it a good ad? It shows a crotchety old man pissin’ ‘n moanin’ that them gawl-darned feds just won’t fix that there gawl-danged fence to keep them pesky mescins outta the dad-burned state.
Maybe he could write a letter to his Senator or something....oh wait.
Well, John, if they had a U.S. Senator worth spit, maybe something would have been done about it. You think?
