Gordon Brown has announced he is resigning as UK prime minister.

Mr Brown is on his way to officially tender his resignation to the Queen, and recommend that Conservative leader David Cameron should succeed him.

Speaking alongside his wife Sarah outside No 10 Downing Street, he said the job had been "a privilege" and wished his successor well.

His decision comes as the Tories and Liberal Democrats are poised to agree a deal to form a government.

Labour's attempts to negotiate a deal of their own with the Lib Dems, after last week's inconclusive election result, ended in failure on Tuesday.

Mr Brown succeeded Tony Blair as prime minister in June 2007 after spending ten years as chancellor of the exchequer.

Cromwell?? Really they need a Washington. Cromwell was more like a despot. Our founders are the answer,,, not a different form of tyranny.

France smokes england, governmentally.

Thanks entirely to DeGaulle, who was given dictatorial power by a military revolt (that started in Algeria no less), but proceeded to create a framework for a Fifth Republic that has, in many ways, been a model for other nations. France, unlike the UK, has an elected executive, who is not a mere figurehead (as is the case with the Italian president). The French Assembly can be in disarray, but a strong executive (in theory) keeps external and internal policy stable (which was NOT the case under the Third and Fourth Republics).

LOL,, funny title. And “divine right”,, even funnier! Ok,,, i can’t win this if you believe that the lord himself appointed the queen! Snicker,,,

Oh, I really don't... that was meant as a completely impartial quote. It's just one of those quirky thing that one has to take for what they are. Europeans would be just as befuddled if someone explained to them Senate procedural rules like that filibuster thing ;)

For unearned illegitimate (unless you think she was seated by God) power?

It's a monarchy and in a monarchy the sovereign is the "fons honoris", meaning that he or she is per defition the most honorable person, as all societal honors hinge on the king or queen. Therefore the Royal Air Force or Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition (i.e. now the Labour Party). I find it quirky, but not evil.

There will be no strong conservative government if they are in league with the LibDems.

Well that will settle who is right! Besides, im an American with .38, it might not go quite that way. (my head being split and all)

And i’ll certainly NOT show respect to a Monarch. It’s an illegitimate form of government. Se deserves only the respect any person her age should get,,, but not a whit more.

Go curtsey if you need.

And in the middle of it all...the Green Party:

Caroline Lucas: 'A chance to change this rotten system'

Video at the link:

*****************************

The Green Party's first MP has said her support for a political coalition would have to be won on a ''case-by-case basis''.

Caroline Lucas added that the nation was facing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the ''rotten'' political and voting system.

You, sir, are a jerk.

It's wonderful to know that YOU have all the answers. And a .38.

May God be kind to you when you reach maturity.

The Queen is head of state, and there is a hung Parliament.

fROM THE ABOVE LINK ...POST #52:

************************************EXCERPT**********************************

After Mr Brown announced he would be stepping down and would see if Labour could do a deal with the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives upped their offer to a promise of a referendum on changing the voting system from existing first past the post system to AV.

Easy tiger. YOU suggested that my assessment of a monarch was worth of having my head split. I helpfully pointed out that we colonists resist such British thuggery.

And that makes me a jerk? What it *actually* makes me, is the guy who made you prove that thuggery is the main defense to a criticism of the british system.

Thank you!

Even a party that wins in a landslide must be asked by the monarch to form a government. It is Her Majesty’s Government.
