I am waiting for them to show up, as I answered the same way.
They will get this handout:
Had a moderately illiterate woman show up at my door. She spoke like her tongue was numb (like she’d been doing coke all day). I told her that I already submitted the form and that there are two people living in the home.
She pressed me much the same way and actually got a little snippy with me. I didn’t give her the pleasure of an argument and said the same thing as you, “There are 2 people in this home” over and over again.
I only filled out the number of residents, our age and race. Period. Haven’t had a visit yet, but did get a follow-up mailing because I hadn’t sent in the form by April 1st (more like the middle of April). That’s it so far.
I’m looking forward to a visit, should that occur. I’ll show them the ‘No Solicitation’ sign on my door (provided by the city, and covers city regulations), and tell them that the federal government isn’t excluded from that IMO.
Those are just folks hired as temps. I’m sure they are just doing the follow up work in accordance with their short term contract. You shouldn’t worry until they show up with thr SWAT team and the CEA (census enforcement agency) agents.;^)
All I put on mine was that four Americans lived at this address. . .

We misplaced our form in a bout of spring cleaning, and so Mrs. kevkrom was subject to a personal visit a little while back. Despite the fact that she does tend to be a liberal, I must be a good influence on her, as she provided only the number of people and dates of birth. (I wouldn’t have provided birthdays, but she still did a good job nonetheless.)
Ten years ago, I got the long form and sent it back with only the number of people in my home.
First some old guy started calling. Then he tried to invite himself over. I told him I wouldn't open the door. He tried cajoling. Then he tried vague threats of legal trouble. Then he gave up.
Don't worry about them. They have a list of tactics they have to run through to earn their check. They don't really care, they just want to get paid.
I “never received” any of the three census mailings I hear other people got.
Sure enough, 2 Saturdays ago, the census guy showed up. I didn’t invite him in, I came out and we spoke on the front porch. He was polite, handed me the bilingual “guide,” then proceeded to ask his questions, filling out a form on his clipboard.
“Is this your primary residence, or a vacation home?” Primary.
“How many people living here?” 5
“What is the first persons date of birth?” Ages are 36, 35, 14, 12, 11.
“What are their dates of birth?” Ages are 36, 35..
“I need dates of birth.” You’re only going to get ages. In fact, you’ve already been given all the information I will provide.
“Race of first person?” I’m not going to answer that or any other question. I’ve given you all you’re going to get.
“I’ll put caucasion.” Put whatever you like, but I didn’t supply the answer, you’re making the decisions on your own from here on out.
“You aren’t going to answer any more questions?” No. The law only requires I provide number of individuals and ages. That’s all I’m providing. It’s nothing personal.
“No, I don’t take it personally. Some people have decided to make a point, for personal, or political, or whatever reasons. That’s fine. You’re actually more polite than most.”
“Anyone of hispanic origin living here?” I’ve given you all the information you’re going to get.
“Have a good day.” You do the same.
Nope, haven’t had one show up yet... I fill in number of people in my home and thats it, as I have my entire life, if they do show up I will tell them politely to not come back... I will not answer any other questions.
We replied in writing that 2 people live here.
A census worker came to the door last week. I told her that we already replied and to have a nice day before closing the door.
We didn’t return the census form and we have no intention of talking to any census workers. With the statements of many RAT officeholders here and the “public service” campaign a few months ago it’s obvious that 500,000 non-existent residents of Massachusetts will be “counted” in the census. So my household not being counted will decrease that fraud by several.
I had one show up at my door one evening last week. A cheerful black woman. Very apologetic, I was ready to answer 1 person lives here when she interjected; we got yours, you’re fine. (odd because I only answered “1” and “human”).
No she wanted to ask if anyone lived next door. Yes I said, but that she’s out a lot. She wanted to know if I would be a proxy and answer for her, as she had visited three times already and that the rules prevented further visits (?).
I declined, and she thanked me and left.
I can’t blame the workers. In Zero’s world it’s probably the best job they can get right now.
The strategy of politely declining is the way to go.
I avoided the census taker yesterday...happened to look out my window and there she was. She didn’t see me and left after a few minutes. I suspect she tried ringing the doorbell, but I disconnected the bell years ago.
Saw a neighbor yesterday who told me the same woman came to his door. She did ask about the house next door (mine). My neighbor said he didn’t know anything about the occupants of that home. I don’t usually like my neighbors, but this one is ok in my book.
Mine was addressed to ‘resident’. I chucked it in the garbage and left town for a week and a half. Haven’t heard anything since. I’m curious to see if they come around.
During the last Census they showed up 3 - 4 times and the on the last time they sent a cute college girl in her early 20’s.
I said I liked the nice touch but the answers remain the same, 4 people, 2 male 2 female, and we’re white.
This year I answered 2 people 1 female 1 male, and we’re American (kids left).
When they come this year I’ll make sure I’m sitting in my garage cleaning my bike or AR-15, drinking a beer and watching Fox news.. hopefully Glenn Beck will be on.
I signed up to do the census specifically to see how it was run from the inside. My concerns revolved around ACORN involvement and use of statistics to infer population patterns.
My 19yo son is also an enumerator thereby earning a better-than-average wage while he’s on break from college.
We had 4 full days of training on confidentiality, safety, specifics at to what qualifies as a housing unit etc.
We were and will be assigned to our local areas - this is SOP so just remember, the person you dis at the door is a neighbor.
We all know the constitutions requires a head count every 10 years. That’s what this is about. There are no extended questionairres related to the 10yr census. There are other studies out there that can be intrusive but you are under no obligation to participate.
We are not there to force responses - if you don’t want to answer any or all questions, we mark you as an REF and move on. If someone at the census wants to bug you from then on, it’s not our doing. We don’t invent the questions or the wording but we are obligated to read them to you as written. And yes, it seems silly to ask a person if they are male when you’re looking at them BUT them’s the rules we were given. And we try to laugh it off best as possible.
There are many houses out there that could have people in them that are not being counted - that’s what we’re paid to find out. Likewise, people either didn’t turn in forms they received or moved and missed their form or ????? - we are here to fill in the holes. We see plenty of screwups by the census bureau with respect to multiple mailings, bad maps, messed up census books but we try to work around these occasions to get the best count possible. I would much rather do that than trust some statistician in Obama’s crowd to “infer” the result of their choice.
So far I think the census folks have done a pretty good job in my area. They try to answer our questions and they try to schedule us efficiently and keep costs down. The classes I trained with were well represented by black/white/young/old/asian/male/female etc. I’ve seen no signs of bias, favoritism or fraud.
All of us MUST wear badges. On the back of the badge is the phone # for the local census board. Call them if you have a problem with the enumerator. There are undoubtedly some bad apples and I’d rather see them fired than tolerated. But give the rest of us a break OK?
It isn’t all that much fun to walk house-to-house in the sun dodging dogs. But most of us thought it important to “get it right”.
